Usable Foliage Techniques?

I am currently trying to make a scene in which I will have a large tree on a small island with other plants surrounding it. The issue I am having is that most of the techniques I know to do plants are outdated or are high poly modeling. Does any one know of any good techniques to do foliage or know of any good tutorials? The programs I have access to are 3ds Max, Photoshop, Z-brush, and UE4 so I would like to try and stay inside of those programs.
