Unstable / Random Ping fluctuations in Creative Servers

Summary

Since a few months there seems to be an issue with random ping fluctuations, which happens in any Creative/UEFN map.
You can have 0 ping for x minutes and all of a sudden it goes up to 30-50 ping and stays there, making the game feel sluggish
Other times your game session can start at 30 ping, and stays there for x minutes, and suddenly goes down to 0 ping after x minutes.

Steps to Reproduce

Play any Creative map, even a simple empty one, and check the ping over a period of time, say 30 minutes

Expected Result

Ping should be stable, according to your connection
If I normally have around 0 ping, I should have around 0 ping

Observed Result

Ping randomly changes to a substantially higher number, for no apparent reason, making gameplay feel delayed/sluggish

Hi @Gabriellho,

We have an article about this on the player support site. It should help.

https://www.epicgames.com/help/en-US/c-Category_Fortnite/c-Fortnite_TechnicalSupport/understanding-latency-or-ping-in-fortnite-a000084889

Hi @Flak,

I’m not saying that it’s an issue with my connection or personal setup, and it’s not map-specific either, but a lot of players, from different countries, are experiencing sudden ping fluctuations specifically in Creative servers for no apparent reason. A game session could start and stay at one’s usual ping (say 0) and feel snappy for 10 minutes, then suddenly increase by +30 ping and feel sluggish and slow. Or the other way around, it could start at a higher ping than usual, then suddenly drop to one’s usual ping after a certain time period. You could even just stand still in a map and observe it happening.

This has been happening for a few months now.

Edit: and with Creative servers I mean when playing published public maps, not Creative mode by Epic which actually does not suffer from this problem

This is not a single user having this issue, and a technical support link to understand latency isn’t going to solve it. I’m seeing posts on reddit of people having the same problem, as am I. Specifically in creative. Please raise some awareness of this, we would greatly appreciate it.

Can confirm that lag spikes happen even on low memory/load maps.

FORT-880955 has been added to our ‘To Do’ list. Someone’s been assigned this task.

I can say it definitely doesn’t matter what kinda map it’s on it even happens to me in battle royale.. it’s way more than just 30-50 ping and it’s not my internet because it’s run perfectly the way it should 24/7… My ping will go from 30 to 1200.. yes 1200 and it’s not my internet… It’s the game… I don’t know what y’all be doing. But y’all servers definitely need fixed fs… Can somebody please fix this or figure this out… I’m seriously thinking about uninstalling and I love the game… I really don’t want to… But this needs fixed… And it’s not just me… All my friends have the same exact issue..

I never lag like this tbh. Ping is limited visually to 1000 i believe so idk how you know its 1200 also in uefn/creative islands there can be issues with vehicle spawners and the amount placed this does increase ping for some reason and has been reported. The only other thing could be your connected to the wrong server ?

I have 1gb/s internet and again never lag tbh ping is between 15-27 and im in the uk so i think this is average for my location.

When i join some creative islands ping can go to 60-80 but again this is probs due to devices ie vehicle spawner limits and again this has been reported

From my testing, all game modes by Epic do not suffer from this, Creative mode included, but any public map will have massive and sudden ping fluctuations no matter the amount of devices, memory used, other variables etc. Confirmed by many people as well that play Creative maps and BR almost daily.

I can go in Creative mode by Epic (Creative 1.0) in a map of mine, have my usual ping (0), and then compare it to the published version of exactly the same map, night and day difference in terms of ping. 100% replicable.

I can have my usual ping (0) in published maps as well, but not for long. After x amount of time it will suddenly increase. Or it will start at an increased ping (public or private lobby does not affect it). And not go down. Or it may go down all of a sudden, if you’re lucky.

In Creative mode by Epic, I can have my usual ping for the whole session, without fluctuations.

It makes a lot of maps unplayable/unenjoyable.
