Unreal Engine 5 Foliage Culling Min Distance Not Working - Please Help

Good afternoon friends!

I have been trying to follow Ben Cloward and Sjoerd de Jong’s foliage trick where you have two layers of foliage. One dense layer up close and another less dense layer in the distance.

Around the 36:00 min mark.

Around the 20 minute mark.

The Max distance setting works fine however the Min setting never shows any results for me. I’ve tried using the Grass Type method described by Ben and Sjoerd as well as trying the Foliage paint tool and setting the distance there as well as. Both do not work!

I want to be able to control where the foliage starts as well as where it ends. Right now the foliage always starts close to the camera.

Please help.

Thank you

same problem

Same problem. Following Ben Cloward’s tutorial and UNDINI and I too get different results. ‘Start Cull Distance’ doesn’t seem to do anything.
Also got a problem with the ones a bit further, that they are a lot darker than those nearby. As if they aren’t receiving any light. So the grass is light nearby and very dark a few meters further.

Also, as I’m using UNDINI’s way of creating an AutoMaterial, I can get the grasstypes set to a layer. My grass layer is at an angle, so I can get ‘bald spots’ on certain slopes. I also have a SlopeBlend for my cliff rocks, which are on a top layer, so in essence overriding any grass that would be on a steep slope. But the grass is portruding through the cliff rock texture. So I have steep cliffs on one side that are full of grass.
The same is for the road spline. All the grass is coming through the asphalt.

Same problem, still not working in 2025.
