Unreal Engine 4 virtual texturing support ?

Screw RTX features, would much rather see virtual texturing. That stuff can run on everything from high end to high end mobile if done well, and would greatly simplify some memory management while allowing for a lot more model LODs as a very cool bonus (no worrying about memory requirements for that!). It’d also free up artists to do whatever with texture resolution and variety! Very useful all around.

I don’t get it. The release notes for 4.21.0 Preview 1 state that UE4 supports virtual texturing. My question is, why isn’t there a tutorial about it? Or a showcase demo? And why is it still under “future releases” in the roadmap?

In 4.21 virtual texturing supports only lightmaps. There isn’t any user input needed just enable it with command line.

I don’t get it. The roadmap at Trello says “enabling artists to author very high resolution textures and lightmaps”. The same statement is included in the preview notes https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/announcements-and-releases/1537691-unreal-engine-4-21-preview

I understand it’s an experimental feature, but the way I understand it, it’s not just about lightmaps.

Ahaa I get it now. Thank you Kalle

Just in the plan

It has been there for quite some time… I think more or less 2 years already.

But the UE team is as lazy as ever and didn’t bother to update the roadmap.

There’s card on Trello board for some time.

They also posted in Release Notes and Epic engineer was talking to people in different forum thread (few topics below this on the list of recent topics)
