unreal assistant not work

Summary

Unreal Developer Assistant issue report

Title

Unreal Developer Assistant only responds to “Hello”/“hi” and fails on all other prompts

Description

Since approximately July 9, 2026 at around 23:00 CEST (Spain), the Unreal Developer Assistant has stopped working correctly.

The assistant only responds to the greetings “Hello” and “hi”. Any other prompt, including simple questions such as “What is 2+2?” or Unreal Engine-related questions, fails with the message:

“Failed - The answer generation failed.”

In some cases, the assistant also returns:
“Sorry, I can’t assist with that issue as it violates Epic’s terms of use.”

This happens even with harmless inputs such as “hola” (hello in Spanish).

Steps already tested

  • Main Epic Games account
  • Brand new Epic Games account created for testing
  • Google Chrome
  • Opera
  • Incognito mode
  • Unreal Assistant website
  • Unreal Editor integrated assistant
  • Windows PC
  • Android phone
  • Home Wi-Fi connection
  • Mobile data connection (hotspot)
  • Clearing cookies and browser history
  • Logging out and logging back in

The issue occurs in all of these scenarios.

Reproduction steps

  1. Open Unreal Developer Assistant.
  2. Create a new chat.
  3. Enter any prompt that is not exactly “Hello” or “hi”.
  4. Wait for the response.

Observed behavior

  • “Hello” → Works and returns the standard greeting.
  • “hi” → Works.
  • “HELLO” → Fails.
  • “What is 2+2?” → Fails.
  • “What is Unreal Engine?” → Fails.
  • “Tell me a joke.” → Fails.
  • “hola” → Fails.
  • Any Unreal Engine development question (for example, creating an emissive material) → Fails.

The chat is created successfully and the user message appears in the conversation history, but the assistant does not generate a valid response.

Browser developer tools observations

  • Requests to the Epic API are reaching the server successfully.
  • Conversation listing requests return HTTP 200.
  • The failure seems to happen when the assistant attempts to generate a response for prompts other than the predefined greetings.

Expected behavior

The assistant should generate responses for normal questions about Unreal Engine and other simple prompts, not only for the greetings “Hello” and “hi”.

Location

Spain

Date first observed

July 9, 2026 around 23:00 CEST

Additional note

The behavior is identical across multiple accounts, devices, browsers, and network connections, which suggests the issue may be related to the Unreal Developer Assistant backend service rather than a local configuration problem.

Steps to Reproduce

Open the Unreal Assistant (web or Unreal Editor).
Sign in with an Epic Games account.
Create a new conversation.
Type any normal prompt, for example:
What is Unreal Engine?
What is 2+2?
How do I create an emissive material?
Submit the prompt.
Wait for the assistant to generate a response.

Expected Result

The Unreal Developer Assistant should generate a correct response to any valid prompt, including Unreal Engine questions and simple general questions, instead of returning “The answer generation failed.”

Observed Result

The assistant fails to generate a response for almost every prompt and returns “Failed - The answer generation failed.” In some cases it returns “Sorry, I can’t assist with that issue as it violates Epic’s terms of use.” Only the greetings “Hello” and “hi” receive a normal response. The user’s message is saved in the conversation, but no valid answer is generated.
