UNITY 5 goes free

Valve doesn’t charge 40%. I can’t say what they charge, but that’s not what they charge.

The fact that you get full C++ access makes Unreal a clear winner for me. I’m pretty good at C++ and the freedom to add a few hacks here and there to make things either easier for me in the editor, or to add a few things into the animation system or AI or whatever is a huge plus for me. Otherwise I’d just shrug and think, well, I guess I can’t do that then.

I did reading about steam and I’m pretty sure they don’t charge 40% either.

They charge 30%. Which is a normal percentage since Apple and Google and even Epic in the Marketplace are taking the same.

I read that apple takes 30% and valve keeps it secret or something.

I suppose blender should be an option as well over Autodesk products. The pricing on autodesk products is very high for indie devs. And I’m not a fan of the limitations in Maya LT so I’m not sure I’d want to pay for that either. I’m a Max person myself from the time I spent using the free student edition back in the day. It’s hard to switch when you’re skilled at something like 3DS max, but man is it expensive. Blender’s snap to grid really annoys me heh.

Technically, it is secret - and developers aren’t allowed to publicly state it, because some of them can get favorable rates during promotions. But it’s almost-always 30%, just like GOG, Apple, and Google.

Modo is a good alternative to Autodesk products if you don’t like Blender, as they seem to be aiming it towards indie developers.

Blender is too weird for me. I like Modo, Cinema4D, 3DCoat…

I could swear I read 30 % when I registered for the SDK. So its not secret… Or I agreed to not tell. Hmm

So is MODO free or something?

I mean besides Blender there really isn’t much in the way of Indie targeted modeling software right? if we are getting UE4 for free then it would be best to go free all the way?

Well, if you care about a better paid profession and also want a life next to developing games you should look for a different business.

Since version 2.5 Blender is really great especially because of the new UI which makes it easier to use when you come from a different 3d modeling toolkit (I was rather used to Maya, 3DMax and Cinema4D).
And it’s source code is available for free… which seems also to be the killer argument for UE4 here!
Additionally, the scripting language is Python so you don’t need to learn anything new like MEL, COFFEE or something.

Alternatively you could use the free trueSpace but it has been abandoned by Microsoft after its purchase.

Sweet!! is amazing!!

Did you also hear that UE4 went free? :stuck_out_tongue: Wooooohoooooo!
