Unable to load into map on low end devices (Switch, PS4)

Summary

We are playtesting our map and users accessing the map on low end devices, specifically PS4 and Switch, are unable to load into the map. They successfully find the server, download the map, find the game, but get stuck on ‘connecting’ and eventually hit a failure screen in the Fortnite client that either states “There was a problem. We failed to establish connection to the server FailedToConnect” or “We hit a roadblock”.

Our map has been live for over a year, and we have playtested multiple times without ever having an issue isolated to specific devices.

The most notable changes this update compared to previous are we have adding a significant number of new areas and activities for players (these still fall within the memory and project size budget) and we have rolled out SceneGraph in the map.

We initially suspected SceneGraph, but have tested by deleting all SceneGraph entities in the map, and the lower end devices are still unable to connect.

Steps to Reproduce

You will need to contact our team to be part of the playtesting group, or we can give you the private version code of the map. From there:

  1. Load into the map using a Switch or PS4 device
  2. Observe failure to load in

Expected Result

Players on low end devices should be able to load in fine, and not hit error screens

Observed Result

Players on low end devices hit an error screen on their Fortnite Client.

Platform(s)

PS4, Switch (unsure about Xbox as we don’t have this in our playtesting group). The map works fine on PC, PS5, Mobile.
