[UEFN][Critical] Persistent console memory issues — PS4, Xbox One, Series X and Switch crashes/disconnections

Summary

My published UEFN island, Nepp’s Café – REMASTERED, has been experiencing persistent console-specific stability problems that have not been resolved despite extensive optimization work.

The most affected platforms are Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Players experience severe instability, memory-related errors, crashes or unexpected removal from the island, often after only a few minutes of gameplay.

PlayStation 5 is generally stable, although extremely rare memory-related disconnections have also occurred.

Windows PC remains stable, with no comparable problems observed.

The issue is not new. Nintendo Switch has been particularly problematic for a long time, and recent island updates have not provided a lasting solution. Stability issues are now also being reported on other console platforms.

Steps to Reproduce

Launch the publicly published version of Nepp’s Café – REMASTERED.

Join the island using Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Xbox Series X.

Remain in the island and play normally for several minutes.

Observe whether the console experiences memory-related instability or is unexpectedly removed from the game session.

Repeat using Windows PC for comparison.

On Nintendo Switch, the problem has frequently appeared approximately 5–6 minutes after joining, although some players may encounter it sooner.

Expected Result

Players should be able to join the published island and remain connected regardless of their supported platform.

World streaming, asset loading and runtime memory management should not cause unexpected game termination or removal from the session.

Observed Result

Nintendo Switch: Persistent instability and memory-related disconnections. The public release has repeatedly removed players after approximately 5–6 minutes, sometimes displaying an error indicating that memory has reached critical levels. In certain tests, players were disconnected almost immediately. Private UEFN playtest sessions have behaved significantly better than the published version.

PlayStation 4: Serious stability problems, including crashes and/or unexpected session interruptions.

Xbox One: Serious stability problems, including crashes and/or unexpected session interruptions.

Xbox Series X: Memory-related instability and unexpected disconnections from the island.

PlayStation 5: Generally stable. Memory-related disconnections are extremely rare compared with the other affected consoles.

Windows PC: Fully functional in observed testing. No comparable instability, crashes or unexpected session disconnections.

Affected console players may be returned to the Fortnite lobby while PC players continue playing in the same session.

Additional Notes

Extensive optimization has already been performed without a definitive resolution.

The following changes have been implemented over multiple updates:

Removed approximately 456 Billboard devices to reduce memory usage.

Optimized more than 90 Niagara visual effects.

Applied texture LOD bias and reduced texture memory requirements.

Optimized Skeletal Mesh LODs.

Reduced lighting and shadow rendering costs.

Adjusted asset streaming and rendering settings.

Removed or simplified large environment sections.

Relocated the Big Piano Room, containing approximately 774 actors, several kilometers away from the main Café to improve streaming separation.

Reduced memory calculation results substantially during optimization.

Conducted multiple profiling sessions and performance investigations.

Despite these changes, the island continues to experience console-specific stability problems.

An especially important observation is the difference between private UEFN playtests and the published release on Nintendo Switch. Private sessions have sometimes remained stable while the same console encounters critical memory errors in the public version.

We also maintain a complete Unreal Revision Control history, including snapshots before the latest Major Update and the subsequent performance optimization revisions.

Relevant revisions include:

Snapshot 889: Earlier performance hotfix.

Snapshot 1225: Major optimization work.

Snapshot 1227: Latest published Major Update.

Snapshot 1255: Subsequent hotfix, still under review at the time of this report.

The console issues cannot be attributed solely to the most recent hotfix, since they existed before it.

We need Epic Games to investigate the actual technical reason for these platform-specific failures.

In particular, we are requesting:

Investigation of client-side termination and disconnection reasons on the affected consoles.

Verification of whether runtime memory exhaustion is actually responsible for every affected platform.

Investigation of the difference between private UEFN playtests and published island sessions.

Review of potential asset streaming, memory management or platform-specific engine issues.

Assistance from a human UEFN technical specialist, rather than another list of general optimization recommendations.

We have already spent considerable time optimizing the island without identifying the underlying issue.

Please escalate this report for technical investigation. We can provide additional evidence, profiling recordings, revision history and reproduction details if required.
