UE 5.4 Shader compiler Errors

Hey Im writing this because I have no idea how to fix this and I have tried everything I could think of. My UE 5.4 is unable to build projects as I keep running into shader compiler errors. I have cleared the shader chache and uninstalled and reinstalled the engine, however this has not solved anything. (I also validated the engine version). I have tried dx11 and dx12 and that hasnt solved anything either. Today I made the situation worse by trying vulkan and now the project will instantly crash. I tried to fix this by going into my ini file and replacing vulkan with DefaultGraphicsRHI=DefaultGraphicsRHI_D3D12, however, I still crash with the following error message below:

Can anyone help me, I’m loosing my mind. My 2 questions are how can I revert back to before I had selected vulkan without using source controll and the second one is how to I fix my shader compiler issue?

UPDATE: Ok so I fixed the vulkan issue I forgot to hit save on the ini file after changing it. However, The shader compier issue is still present and I am still unable to build.

You might need to build the shader compile worker looking at the errors

Go to your source directory via CMD “Your drive etc\UnrealEngine\Engine\Build\BatchFiles>Build.bat ShaderCompileWorker Win64 Development -verbose”

It should build the worker if for some reason it’s not done.

No it doesnt. For clarification this issue affects all my unreal engine projects not just the one I am working on right now. Also since this specific project was only started about 2 weeks ago it doesnt have source control as it focuses on experimenting and learning systems.

Furthermore, Im currently considering trying 5.5 to see if shaders successfully compile on that version, however, that doesnt solve the issue of 5.4 as I have other projects on that version and they need to stay on that version too

You can’t be making a project from a source build if your engine isn’t built properly.

To compile 5.4 you need to target older versions of windows sdk via a build file

BuildConfiguration.xml (224 Bytes)

This goes in your Engine\Saved\UnrealBuildTool\ folder

Download the source
run Setup.bat
once finsihed
run GenerateProjectFiles.bat

Then copy the BuildConfiguration
Make sure you have the windows sdk 10.0.22621.0 installed

(most newer versions throw compile errors due to a conflicting define of INFINITY in the later SDKs)

Compile the engine successfully
Then you can continue with your project. Or switch to the binary version.

You can’t be trying to compile your project on a half baked version of the engine. Nothing will work correctly.

Ah sorry I missunderstood what you meant by source (I’m not very knowledgable in this field). I am currently runing off of the epic games launcher and installing engines that way. I have not done a source install of UE.

I only just now found out that there was another way of installing the engine. I appologies for the confusion.

This thread mentions that if substrate is enabled (new material shader) it can cause the shader compiler error during packing.

If you do not use substrate then maybe disabling it and it might fix the error.
