UE-100533, no uvs on usd - closed by design?

Hi,
I have a question in regards to:

Which has been closed by design. I reported a similar issue (uvs not recognized then assigning a material to a usd, even though st or uv primvars are present - Case # 00255570) and was advised that its the same issue than the one reported above.
I was surprised to see it being closed ‘by design’. Do I understand it correctly that the intention is to never support materials that make use of uvs when importing usd? This seems either a very drastic limitation making usd in many cases non-usable? Or potentially I have misunderstood and there is an alternative way to utilize uvs in UE4?
