Too many particles with ribbon emitter

I’m trying to make ribbon particles in UE4, and while I got them working, it seems there are just way too many particles rendering at once. I tried increasing the step size, but that doesn’t seem to lower the sprites being emitted, aka the “accuracy” of the ribbon. The ribbon particle system slows down my system greatly, they spawn thousands of polygons, and they really don’t need to. If it’s possible to just spawn a simple quad with ribbon data, I’d like to know how to do that.
