Thumbnail detection AI is not working correctly and wrongly flagging our thumbs

Summary

For map 4829-2803-4516 we have a warning that our thumbnails are too similar to others despite that these are completely hand made and cost hundreds to get done and there is nothing out there like them for sure. This is not an isolated incident it seems, others are seeing a problem too.

Steps to Reproduce

Trying to update a game and thumbs are getting flagged by the AI system as too similar

Expected Result

they look nothing like anything out there, so should not get warning. If there is something then the system should show those thumbnails to give an objective view of what is “similar” to a human.

Observed Result

Just warning without any reference, likely is wrong

We also have the same warning for this map: 9664-2937-0308 for a thumb we have been using for a very long time

Just for reference, all of these thumbnails are getting warnings.

These are being flagged as well for our maps with Team Bullseye

It is basically impossible to use any decent thumbnail now. I can’t even use thumbnails ive been using for years without getting flagged.

Yep, this is very frustrating. Just spent about an hour tweaking and changing our completely original thumbnail only to end up having to use a temporary one with generic text on a black background to get it to pass… We will not be able to justify spending money on thumbnail artists if this is not fixed.

Big Changes for Discover in Fortnite

Quote from documentation

Thumbnails that were previously published without these restrictions may now receive warnings.

I still say this is a bug as legitimate creators that have had their thumbnails that are custom made and cost actual money being flagged without any proof of it looking like anything else out there, is a bug. This is an actual game killer without any legitimacy to it and in fact can be objectively proven false with AT LEAST 2 of our thumbs for sure. Something is very wrong and it needs looking at asap.

The questions that need to be answered are:

  1. What thumb is MY thumb too similar to? Is it a spammer’s thumb? Or is it another real creator’s thumb?
  2. Who made which one first and posted it? Do both maps now get this warning?
  3. How do we spend time and money on making another thumb if we ZERO idea of what is similar so we don’t get what is essentially shadow banned?

What Epic has done here is actually really discouraging to those that spend months on making a game to then be told without a single shred of proof that the face of the game is not going to be shown because AI has figured out that it’s “too similar”.

I get that getting rid of spam maps is a high priority, believe me when I say we’ve been looking at discovery get worse and worse for years to a point where it’s almost pointless to think that a legit map is going to get discovery time compared to the hundreds of spam maps. This method isn’t quite it though and this is immediately negatively affecting many creators.

In the end, how do we even have any idea of how to fix our thumb to be able to have that tiny shred of a chance in discovery if there is no evidence or guidance as to what is “too similar” and who gets priority when making thumbs, how does the system know…

hi @GraemeBB

Anyway as an indie Developer all that’s possible is to highlight the changes.

Update 25th April 10:31 UK time

Found documentation on how this should work!!

New Content Pre-Checks and Discover Filtering for Fortnite Islands

My thumbnail or title has been flagged and I’m unable to publish my island or have been filtered from Discover – what are my options?
Update your title, thumbnail, and background image, then re-submit for review.

I want to publish a new version of an island with an original title/thumbnail I have created. Will I be blocked or filtered from Discover?

No. If you or your team are the original creators of the content that matches or nearly matches an existing island, you will not receive a content pre-check warning. You won’t be blocked from publishing or filtered from Discover. In other words, creators of original content are able to publish titles and thumbnails that are highly similar to their existing islands.

There are existing islands with very similar thumbnails and titles. Can those be updated without being blocked or filtered?

  • Thumbnails: only the island that was historically first to publish the thumbnail can update it without being blocked or filtered from Discover.

  • Titles: only the island with the most unique users in the last 96 hours will be able to update the title without being blocked or filtered.

How is the original creator identified?
The original creator is determined using the following criteria:

  • Thumbnails: The creator or team that first published the thumbnail in the Fortnite ecosystem.

  • Titles: The creator or team who published an island that either had 100 unique users in the last 96 hours, or accumulated at least 150 minutes of editing time on the project in the last 30 days.

So @GraemeBB this doc has taken hours of reading to find buried many levels/links down.

This process should work according to documentation, so its bugged.

It’s more than this, because the thumbnail with low quality (made with AI) get a low discovery research and for me this is the opposites i have a thumbnail made by a thumbnail artist spend dollars on it for what ? people spend 0 dollars and their IA Thumbnail are better than mine, this game become horrible

Thank you for fixing the issue :+1:

We posted an update yesterday, closing out this ticket. Thank you!

FORT-1092919 has been ‘Closed’. The issue reported is not caused by a bug in the tool.

@Flak still for all our thumbnails it’s not fixed, we see many people reporting on twitter/X even after the supposed bug fix. We definitely have unique thumbnails..

would agree this sucks, and more the reason why one can’t fully block thumbnails and the limits some of it will have (similar characters or text style), and why any map using ingame thumbnails (like a thumbnail camera ingame) with added transparency layer for custom look, should always be considered original. but maybe this improves or is really fixed like posts above.

Yesterday we’ve made 10 different variants trying to pass our thumbnail detection. @Flak
Definitely useful information:

Below variant is rejected, because of the banana peely soccer player. If we remove the soccer player entirely, it passes the check.

Below variant is accepted, since it’s no banana peely skin

We tried the following ‘kick’ character replacements as well, but they all get rejected.
We basically can not use ANY reference to the fishstick skin / banana peely skin in our thumbnails anymore. Which is definitely a calibration issue with the detection AI.

All these thumbnails are flagged as well, I assume because of the banana peely skin & fishstick skin. They are definitely unique enough. Please fix this before we need to spend another 10+ hours recreating thumbnails for no reason but just to pass the wrongly calibrated validation.

@Flak another very good example which shows the flaws of the calibration.

We can’t use this rainbow text anymore in this example.

This is hurting our maps because the CTR will be lower. Please fix asap..
