Third Person Controller: Inconsistent Character Rotation Updates When Stationary

Summary

Device: Third Person Controller

Description:
The direction the Fortnite character’s body is facing is not accurately reflecting the direction of the cursor on PC or thumbstick on console/mobile when they are stationary.

Context:
This is inconsistent with the fluid facing direction observed while moving. Due to the lack of view rotation access which is based on the camera (which needs to be replaced for use with this device) we are very limited in how we can use devices and visual effects in relation to the character rotation. The primary issue being the visual effect pickups, which lose the expected behavior when used for visual elements that rely on this rotation to update accurately. Attempting to attach to the head socket as a workaround inherits the issue of the idle animations playing on the skeletal mesh.

Request:
Adding an option on the device for “Continuously Update Character Rotation” would be an excellent option to add to the device. The idea being that enabling this option would result in the Fortnite character immediately turning its body/rotating for all rotation changes, and providing a way to achieve consistent behavior while moving or stationary.

Steps to Reproduce

Add a third person controller device set to facing cursor or twin stack, and a fixed angle camera configured for top down, and then add both to the player.

Expected Result

The desire is to have the player’s rotation update accurately to the facing/aiming direction at all times, so that the rotational updates observed while moving, are equivalently reflected when stationary. In relation to the examples provided, the behavior observed in the second clip shared with the character moving and the rotation updating to the facing direction smoothly and consistently, would be the expected behavior while stationary.

Observed Result

The direction the Fortnite character’s body is facing is not accurately reflecting the direction it should be facing when the player is changing the aim/look direction but not also moving the character.

Additional Notes

Alternative Suggestion: As an alternative, providing a socket for visual pickups to attach to that reflect a forward vector from the head rotation (without pitch) would also solve this issue. My guess is the prior suggestion is more technically feasible, but I just wanted to provide another approach in case it’s useful.
