Texture on object rendering grey

I am trying to add texture to this mountain:

but it does not seem to render correctly. It just makes the object grey. I am using the Rock texture from the KiteDemo. You can see the screenshots for more information (before/after shots).

Why does it just turn grey like that and not apply my texture to the object?

Deleting the original material attached to the mountain seemed to fix my issue.
