Substrate, am I missing something?

I have decided to get into substrate materials and after few day of various testings I have wondered am I missing something?

  1. Layered material looks cool but my personal experience in cgi says it super niche material and clear coat is doing just fine for this purposes.
  2. Thin film - again looks cool and again super niche material.
  3. Glass looks much better, and ability to add roughness is super nice.
  4. SSS for the opaque material is unusable because of the noise.
I haven’t tested tessellation and displacement yet, and performance, but the last one even without proper testing feels heavy on the system.
It’s been already two version updates of the engine with zero changes to the “material that going to become a new standard” and I am wondering is it already abandoned ?

No… it is getting constant fixes/improvements, see the feedback thread. It would be a travesty for it to be abandoned if only because it solves the longstanding issue with mixing metals/non-metals.
