Stuttering when player is moving on large animated object. FPS is fine.

Summary

Hi all,

I have the sailing ship prop animated to be rocking as if on waves and for the most part the player seems OK while running about on it. But occasionally there will be what appears to be lag spike in player motion. The FPS seems to remain constant its just a motion thing. By constant I mean over the course of the whole 20 minute map it varies 60-80fps but I dont really see FPS spike or dip rapidly over a short period of time as what a lag ‘spike’ would do. Sometimes the player will ‘pop’ through the mesh into the lower decks as the ship rocks. A similar stuttering also happens on another single static mesh object which is moving in a straight line. Especially if the player tries to do a running slide. In the longer video below on the island the player is trying to run-slide multiple times and it is just stuttering instead. Tho I managed to pull off 1 slide at the end.

I am using an animated sequence to rock the ship and move the island mesh.
All meshes are set to ‘moveable’.
I have tried using Data Layers but that seems to cause other issues like spawners not appearing.
Reducing the total number of meshes helps the FPS by a few but the stuttering remains constant / reliable.
Project size is decent - memory 35/100. Download size 45/400mb.
I have compressed / down ressed textures and audio files.
Performance is solid on the non animated meshes.

It feels like it may not be an optimisation issue rather a setting or the inherent way the player moving on an animated object works.

Does anyone know of any settings that may help?

Thank you

Steps to Reproduce

Test 1:
Drop a large mesh into the world.
Create animated sequence where mesh is moving from one point to another over enough time for the player to log in, get on and try some movements.
After a while at certain points 30% of the time player motion will appear jittery and run-sliding will also 90% of the time jitter.

Test 2:
Add animated rotation to the mesh and test player motion on it again.

Expected Result

Player motion to be smooth and reliable on animated meshes.

Observed Result

Player motion is not smooth and reliable on animated meshes.

Additional Notes

This feels like it is a settings / engine thing rather than an optimisation thing.

I feel that I have reduced but not eliminated some of the stuttering. I set my sequence device playback speed to 1 and scaled my keyframes in the sequences to match. Previously it was .08 playback speed and same ratio for sequence key frames so visually the playback looks the same.
