State of mirror effects

I have an example material that requires engine setting distance fields to be on, I don’t use it in development because it takes too long to build. Assuming I don’t use distance fields what options do I have for mirror effects on water/metal? Sometimes I see what looks like a reflection in some of the engine materials. Also there is that reflection capture actor in every map, can that capture the static scene for reflection material or is it for static light reflections?
