Solid I - UE5 - Lumen, Nanite, FX

Hi everyone,

Excited to share our latest Unreal & Houdini project. We used Rokoko to create and drive physics simulations in Houdini and then brought them into Unreal 5 to do the rendering and lighting.

We had to build a blueprint setup to load all the geometry and link it to the animation as an fbx straight into Unreal crashed on import.

All rendered using Lumen in Unreal.

Hi @TheRemesh,

Very interesting idea! Are you planning to do something more with this character or is it just an experiment?

Hello @theremesh ! Welcome to the community and thank you for sharing your project with us!

I do wonder the same as galconda because I think the animation and general character design are gorgeous and while it would be nice to know if this character will take part in more, it’s very refreshing to see it as its own letting the mind wander about them and their story.

I was wondering, how did you manage to get the flaky ash effect on the chest part of the character and how long did this take? If you don’t mind me asking that is.

Thank you Galconda! It’s an experimental abstract animation, so the nature of work is always focusing on visual quality and experimentation.

Thank you @The_M0ss_Man in the future we will do more, but the design and workflow took the majority of our time for this animation, so we will expand upon what it will do in the future, also with other characters.

The texture was all done in substance painter and probably the easier part of the project. It took probably 6 weeks to do to translate the simulation from Houdini into Unreal and reach the quality we wanted and work through a lot of technical blocks.

Hey there @theremesh !

Thank you for explaining! That was very helpful as I’ve never used Houdini before and texture creation is still newer to me.

Is there often a lot of hurdles from translating from Houdini to Unreal?

It depends what you do, some things are easier than others but you have to manage file size, animation length in some cases to make sure things import fine

Hi there @theremesh,

Hope you’re well and having a great week so far!

This is wicked cool. The creature slowly coming apart then unraveling into some rather stunning rock formations…its rather beautiful. In an eerily wonderful way. What inspired this projects creation?

Thank you @PresumptivePanda. We were doing some exploration of human movement and animation, experimenting with simulation techniques and through that exploration, this is the result that we found most interesting. We work in an abstract way to discover to new ideas
