I am getting a smoothing groups error message when importing a FBX from Lightwave 2015.
What can I do t make sure the geometry renders smooth?

As far as I know, LightWave does not include Smoothing Groups when exporting an FBX file. Doing a quick search online, I found “MergeSmoothing is a Windows program that will read an FBX file and generate smoothing groups based on the normals of the mesh… This program works best with Lightwave version 11.6 and up.”
In addition to that, Maya and 3DS Max export FBX files with smoothing groups, so if you had access to these, you can import the FBX into one of those programs, then re-export to include smoothing groups.
Finally, you could simply ignore the warning if you are happy with the result of the imported mesh. This import error will not cause your project to fail.
