Summary

I have set constrain movement, jump/crouch set to dedicated, ranged direction is set to full range movement, lock direction while aiming/shooting is off (although makes no difference) movement speed multiplier is 2.0 but movement while aiming/shooting is 0.0 as I need players to remain still for taking there shot. Target lock on setting is irrelevant as i’m the only player on the map so doesn’t come into play. But basically build mode does not function, not all pieces connect, player wont rotate vertically , pickaxe only hits to the side, I added some videos in the comments below all only a few seconds or so long showing the issues, must be at least 6 or so all stemming from these settings on this device,

Steps to Reproduce

use the above settings with a fixed angle camera also applied, try place builds above or below your player , try place a wall piece, then try connect a floor piece to the bottom of the wall(or ramp), also create blocks 1 tile wide and broad, but 1/4th of a tile high, stack these 4 high as to fill a grid square, now box yourself in with these squares, youl find only the block between your feet and knees is the only block you can break.

Expected Result

players should be able to place builds in both facing directions, but also above and below on a rotation, players pickaxe with hitbox should also have that same dial style rotation.

Observed Result

can only place walls and ramps, floor pieces only connect to the top of these and not the bottom, pickaxe only hits facing direction between feet and knee height.

another bug, shooting backwards

The problem isn’t the shooting direction, it is the fact the player himself will not rotate 90 degrees to face the way that your shooting , also there is a issue with the pickaxe, you can point the pickaxe up and down but it doesn’t have a hit box to actually hit the things it is swinging at.

I have since found the cause of this, it stems from using 2 devices on the same map, they seem to conflict with each other even being only registered into 1 and using different priorities, I’m since back to 1 device, but the builds and pickaxe issues are my top concern with the device, although using some items as mentioned below and the ascender don’t function, but may all be down to an orientation issue

And another bug..

another bug pickaxe has no hitbox other than forward direction , yet swings up and down when facing so.

And this device has been released for how long ?

What I need my player to be able to do whilst registered into the sidescroller and fixed angle, face and move both left and right on a horizontal axis , and I need the full range movement setting as to be able to aim up and down and at every angle/direction in-between for both weapon and pickaxe with the pickaxe’ hitbox to move with the pickaxe angle. I need players to be able to place build pieces other than just a wall or ramp in front of them, but to be able to angle up and down to place them too, I need to be able to register players into 1 of 2 side scroller devices at a time, and them not have weird movements upon its removal to player.

You can see from my footage of “each” issue in “each” clip there is definitely issues, but you need to use the devices to see them, placing the device in a creative session and hitting start on the device does not reveal the issues, as it actually works fine then , but if you start the game and apply to player, it does not behave the same!

To add I am using 2 side scroller devices but only one is attached to any player at any given time, they are both set exactly the same except for movement speed, and there priority’s are different as to ensure no overlap if 2 devices are assigned at once.

If you think I may have set something wrong, then how should I have my devices set to achieve my desired movement?

Ok so the attaching and removing issue stems from using more than 1 device at once even with priority’s, so basically as long as you only have 1 device there is no issue when attaching and removing, but the device still has faults…

Still using the settings mentioned in the previous reply, my player can look up or down but certain hit boxes do not move also , can’t place builds above or below even looking up and down, pickaxe does swing up and down but again has no hitbox other than on a horizontal axis, even the repair tools hitbox does not move with the players direction!

The full ranged movement is what I am using , and although it has a dial movement feel, there is no dial crosshairs even though the action is almost identical to use, This should just be dial with the crosshairs and the crosshair should define the angle of hitboxes for items like builds, pickaxes and the repair tool. This would not only help fix these issues but improve the setting overall.

Just read Tim Sweeney’s post on X about bugs, so let me get this right, This issue may never get fixed because not many people still make side scroller games, because when they tried a year ago, and realized the device is bugged, and complained for a fix and was ignored (yes I even shelved this map for a year waiting on a fix check my initial publishing date) So now what? we just let side scrolling games fizzle out because people make them and play them less due to the unfixed issues?

New bugs arise because your constantly trying to push out new content before its been fully tested for compatibility, maybe make more use of beta mode for new releases so players can test them and report these bugs back sooner before they hit public games.

You might as well remove the device if your not going to fix it, even been a side scroller, up and down movements are necessary, been unable to build or break builds with pickaxe above or below player just makes it a useless device!

On further time spent investigating the full ranged movement setting , although weapons rotate fine, due to the build mode not doing so armoured walls will only place as floor pieces, cozy campfires and launch pads won’t even place at all , and pickaxes don’t rotate there hitbox when aimed up or down.

Just allowing builds mode and the pickaxe hitbox to rotate vertically should fix all these issues. This is all that is needed for this device to make it useable!

So to try recap to save you having to read through every post.

Now The real issues are weapons do rotate up and down and shoot perfectly fine, however been in build mode your placing of builds just simply do not rotate on that same vertical angle of up and down. builds do not rotate up or down to place

The pickaxe has an issue too, it does rotate up and down somewhat, but swings right through objects with no hitbox as to be able to hit the object. it’s like the hit box is still forward facing from the character and not rotating on a vertical angle.

These both have knock on effects too , for example some items you would attach to wall like armoured wall does not attach to walls, but floor pieces only like it doesn’t understand what axis it should be being applied to , this goes for cozy campfire’s and launch pads also , these naturally only place on floor pieces, but will not place at all.

With weapons I have no issues using them vertically although a dial style crosshair would have been a nice “optional” addition.

with builds and pickaxes they are clearly not the same orientations as is with weapons, this needs to use the same axis as weapons as to allow builds above and below, and to break them above and below (when in reach).

The above are the issues directly impacting me, below is another issue that does not affect me, i’m just merely informing you what else I found.

There is another issue with using 2 devices on the same island even having different priorities’, this was what at one point prevented my character turning left and right, although still allowed to shoot both left and right whilst locked facing one way, it also caused all the movement issues at the end of the round when unattaching from player. I’m not currently having an issue with this any more since going back to just using 1 device only, but just making you aware of this.

OK so we already know builds and pickaxe are not rotating for player when in sidescroller, here is another issue when using builds with side scroller Not all builds are lining up! The floor piece will not align with the bottom of a wall or stairs, however it seems to connect correctly from the top of the walls and ramps.

You might as well fix this at the same time too!

These devices was definitely not ready for release, it’s like somebody just couldn’t be bothered/too rushed to finish the the device before releasing it!

Please fix.

Another bug, but more minor than all the above, is when throwing an item, in this case a clinger, the blue line is there kind of if you look closely enough for it , but not functioning as one would imagine, you’d expect a kind of dial vibe with the blue line going the way the player faces, been able to aim vertically, you can throw the clinger in any direction, but other than knowing which way you push on the controller, you have no idea where it will go. aiming a throwable

It kind of all is one issue is it not, the side scroller device? It’s literally a rushed to release device that was not completed or ready for release and since forgotten, It’s been like this since day one of release, the map was shelved for over a year once already, If I start numerous tickets for each function not working they will all just sit dormant as they’ll look like spam posts and be closed.

Surely dealing with all these issues on a single device at once would by far be the most effective and would save the most time (like time sweeney stated) for epic than dealing with each individually going through the process.

I still appreciate the response even if I disagree with the process, thankyou.

FORT-1087279 has been ‘Backlogged’. This is an issue we’d like to address in the future.

If I could give preference from my experience of handling the device, I would say you need to keep the full range rotation active for hip fire as well as on aiming, and add a dial style crosshair whilst aiming , and a deterioration on accuracy without aim. The “in build mode” critically also needs attention, it’s like the x/y/z’s are incorrect for build pieces which is why armoured walls place on floor pieces and not walls, yet cozy campfires and launch pads will not place on any floor piece, as well as the player not rotating in build mode like they do when in aiming, both need have rotation this is fortnite!

I 'll sit back and take this as you’re agreeing there is an issue and it needs work, but is not a top priority, so don’t expect anything immediately, but has joined the back of the line, and eventually somebody will be assigned to it?

ok so my map is now at a point I can demonstrate the issue more clearly with 3522-7369-3876 being the code. As you start you’re in a pre lobby, first person has had to be enabled by default due to this issue, but you’ll see a sign with an option to go into sidescroller, turn on the sidescroller mode, and also at the other sign, turn on stone award for destruction, and once all player are aboard the raft you’ll be teleported and the game will begin.

Now it is a turn based game (something you don’t see elsewhere) so you’ll be stationary if it is not you’re turn, but on your turn you can select an item (with pickaxe button) , and move, I used the repair tool rather than the pickaxe as to make it an item needed to be selected. but both pickaxe and the repair tool fail to rotate (you can enable pickaxe in debug mode for testing that also) destroying a few props/builds will earn you stone, now try place that earned stone and connect a few builds and you’ll see the issue with the rotation , and the connection of pieces. you’ll also see how build mode X/Y/Z’s including pickaxe and some items was never added to the device like it was for the weapon axis, preventing items like launch pad being used also, is this not fortnight? Hope this brings some clarity on the issue
