Shipping build not able to read external storage after upgrade to android sdk 30+

After upgrading to Android SDK 30+, the shipping build can no longer access external storage.

In the shipping build, I need to read .pak files placed under \UnrealGame\MyGame\Saved\, and also read and write several other files in this directory. This worked fine with Android SDK 28, but after the upgrade to SDK 30, I can no longer read or write any files in that location.

Steps to Reproduce

anyone?

Hi Tyrone,

Can you confirm device and Android version you are seeing this on?

Best regards.

Hi Tyrone,

Indeed, from Android 11 (target SDK 30), significant updates to storage were made https://developer.android.com/about/versions/11/privacy/storage whereby read/write access is prohibited outside of the app’s specific file system sandbox. Are you seeing the issue in any other configurations or just in Shipping? What setting do you have for “Use ExternalFilesDir for UE4Game files?”.

Best regards.

Hi Tyrone,

Just checking in if the UseExternalFilesDir setting alleviated the problem on your end?

Quick update. We are looking at this issue on mainline and we will look at backporting to 4.27+. I’ll circle back with a CL once it’s available.

Best regards.

Hi Tyrone,

After further discussion with the development team, there will likely not be a fix propagated to 4.27+. The recommendation will be to target SDK 28 in development and latest SDK (presumable 35 ATM) for final shipping packaging.

Best regards.

it happens on many mobile, the one i am currently looking at is xiaomi with android version: 15
