Shadow penumbra artifacting with ray traced directional light shadows

I’m getting this shadowing error on my directional light, using 5.5.3 with ray tracing. I’ve experimented with all the shadow settings in the post processing volume, as well as on the light itself, but nothing makes a difference. Tested with VSMs and regular shadow maps. I’ve also tried doing a higher resolution render at 150% screen percentage but the issue is exactly the same. Nanite disabled in project. I’ve run out of ideas, has anyone come across this and know how to fix?

Since you are not using Nanite, and already tested virtual and regular shadow maps, please test the following in your project settings:

  • In Rendering > AA method, test with both TSR and TAA to deal with the shadow noise.

  • In Lighting, test by toggling “Affects Distance Field Lighting”

  • Please make sure your normals maps are properly setup and clean, to avoid shadow artifacts. Hope this helps!
