Not so nice to hear that paper2d will not see any real development for the near future. I really cannot understand why is happening. It makes no sense!
The good news is that Unreal has believed in us and has awarded us a Dev Grant for Spartan!
The other good news are that both Sony and Microsoft have accepted us to release Spartan on their consoles!
I wanted to share some possitive things with all of you, because i am afraid information will drive away newcomers and might even discourage some current users.
Fellow paper2d developers please do not loose hope and lets all join forces so we can persuade them that they are making a huge mistake by not assigning any resources for paper2d development.
Appreciate the update Michael! Sorry if we hassled ya too much XD
Good luck on the Paragon project!
I agree joining forces would be be a great idea. Perhaps we could organize a twitter list of known Paper2D devs? Or create our own progress threads and keep them updated. Iāll try and get mine going soon!
I think showing we are actively working on 2D Projects, like Spartan has, is the best way to encourage Epic to continue development on Paper2D!
If anyone wants to follow my paper2D project you can check my websitewhich has a little twitter button that opens my twitter feed. Itās still a W.I.P though so Iād avoid the screenshot section as itās empty and look for the twitter button for the screenshots
No worries! Iām excited to see what people keep making with Paper2D, and the docs/samples team is preparing the Match 3 sample which will be nice to get out there as well. Iāll almost certainly be using it myself for GGJ and Train Jam next year.
Congrats on the grant and getting approved for console dev BTW!
Thatās good to hear, Paper2D does not have the feature set of animating/anim notifies like Unity where you could put together, rig, and animate a 2D character, but if Paper2D is going to have that in the future, itās easily worth the wait.
I think Paper2D has huge potential and Iām sure that in the near future we could create something similar to Dust and Ori with it.
Paper2D has evolved faster than how Unity2D did but itās still behind, I hope that we can enjoy soon features like Anim Notifies, 2D Skeletal Animations and improved performance.
if you are reading post for the love of God, come back man!
You are our medic! We cant survive in the battlefield without our medic We are dying out there!
Just to get more Paper2d guys involved (because it will eventually affect you too) is something that i am trying to fix for the past month.
If i am right it would be impossible for us to create a game that has lots of bells and whistles. Hopefully i am the one that is doing something wrong otherwise we are screwed!
You probably have to message directly. I think Twitter is the best way to get him to review the pull or have someone review it.
also Iād like to say thank you for making a contribution to paper2d. The way we save paper2d is by putting in the work to finish it I think. eventually unreal will return and make paper2d badass but I think as a community we can come together and get what we need now done. weāre all programmers(I suck and am new at it, but Iām willing to learn/try.) so why not? hehe.
Iāve been working on a 2D RPG/brawler idea and I was tempted to switch to Unity. However, having to pay for soooo many different plugins pushed me away from actually using it (that and I donāt know C#) and I just love Blueprints so much I canāt let that one go.
Since Iām working with a customisable character, I really want to see it through that they add the skeletal mesh feature (and morphing/deforming) for Paper2D. Sockets are my current workaround but theyāre not always effective.
Signed. Currently making a 2D game in Unreal myself and there were a lot of problems I had to work around so far. Itās interesting to read that some stuff Iāve been struggling with is a result of the delayed support for Paper2D.
A lot of beginning game designers are instructed to start with something simple and 2Dā¦and they do a bit of research and everyone tells them NOT to use UE4 for 2D work. I think having a strong 2D setup/tools is super important for drawing people into UE4. If beginners start with another engine they are unlikely to return to UE later when theyāve already learned a lot of one.
One of the biggest buggers in Paper2D is the fact that if you use a custom collision for a tilemap (so not a square), the collision is disabled at runtime once you manually force an update in collision.
2019 and even Paper2D, still with the same level, it is very sad that project does not advance. Now with the integration of visual Unity Scripting things will change. However it hurts to leave Blueprint. But, A project with 100 animations in Paper2D is an insult. Creating the tiles too, creating a Pixel Art project seems to be as complex as developing Fortnite ⦠The camera doesnāt really work for 2D, and the team doesnāt answer the messages.
