Summary

This device has had a bug for the past several years which causes players to lose their inventory when loading into an island that is using the Auto Save/Auto Load settings.

Essentially, players lose their progress at random instances and their inventories are completely wiped.
This has caused the majority of combat maps to just give up on saving player inventories and instead just put every single item for free so players don’t have to “farm” for them.

Steps to Reproduce

There aren’t any clear steps to reproduce this issue, because it seems it’s caused by latency/lag when a player joins an island. Probably the device “saves” the player data when it hasn’t even fully loaded into the island, so it “saves” their empty inventory and then loads it seconds later. Causing the player to lose their items.
This is with Auto Save/Auto Load enabled.
Manual saving and loading probably don’t have this issue.

Expected Result

Players should succesfully load their saved inventories using Auto Save and Auto Load on the Save Point device.

Observed Result

Players sometimes lose their inventories.

UPDATE: Every single player lost their inventories today after updating the map.

I didn’t even touch the device. I just synced the project to my laptop, updated the leaderboard, and published.

UPDATE 2:
The issue was we changed damage volumes on team bases so they now eliminate enemy players instead of damaging them.
This creates an issue with join-in-progress because when players load into the island they have no team assigned for 1 or 2 seconds, which makes them instantly die due to spawning in either team base.
Now, this triggers the Save Point device and saves this instance of the player when they’re not fully loaded yet, saving an empty inventory. This essentially wipes players inventories.

So the error was mine, however the fact that the save point device saves the player before they’re fully loaded is the 4 year old bug I was referring to. This has made most creators give up on saving loadout entirely.
