Inspired by Ozgur Ustundag’s “Cinelight” works, I wanted to try my hand by replicating the lighting on characters from a few movie shots. There’s still lots of room for improvements but I had fun while doing it, and I learned much more than analysing the shots by just looking at them.
The characters were generated with Metahumans and imported in Unreal, where I worked on the lighting. I used raytraced shadows to get more accurate soft shadowing on the faces, and finally composited the original shot’s background with Photoshop.
The goal was to study and practice character lighting by learning from the great cinematographers.
