Recommended Hardware?

Testing UE5 is great. However, the engine seems to be very hungry.
Any recommended specs from Epic to develop smoothly and with no major hardware problems?

Thanks a lot!

Are you talking about the editor performance or game performance? 32+ gigs of ram and something like a 3070 is a must, especially if you’re working with Nanite. I use a 3080/64GB RAM/SSD and I’m not really seeing big issues.

As for the game performance…

Main UE5 features like Nanite are transformative and will never have the same base level of performance of the UE4. Higher minimum requirements are the cost of being able to render assets with billions of polys, having dynamic GI lighting etc. I’m sure things like LWC take advantage of this new baseline too.

UE5 will never run full blast with satisfying performance on something like a PS4, it is designed for PS5 level hardware. That means fairly powerful GPU, decent CPU and an SSD. Many of the new features are based on algorithms which require a higher level of base performance to even work, but in return you can do things you could never do in UE4. (You can use things like decimated proxies for older platforms, but then you’re not using Natite. You’re baking down a potato version of your project and dropping all the gamechanging visual features that your project may have.)

BTW if you don’t need any of these transformative features like Nanite or Lumen, you can turn all of them off and just get the other engine improvements. (If you don’t turn them off and not make use of them, you’re just wasting performance.)

The cost of this progress is a steep one, especially during the chip shortage era, but it will be worth it in the end. Looking back, UE5 will be considered a visionary step, even if it left some projects behind.

Thank ya’ll. Is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 still the best card?
Or anything else that could top that one?

3090 is still the best but soon to be dethroned:

If you can afford a 3090, buy it now. If you can wait until the next line-up is released buy it then.

4090? when will that beast be released?

There is 1 release every 2 years. The 30xx arrived in Sept 2020. 40xx may arrive this year. But there’s also 4 waves of Covid planned and a war that may engulf more European countries.

Who knows, this years started with a Bang.

For now the GPUs prices are stabilising, recovering; you should be able to buy a modern card close to its intended price. On the other hand, the energy prices are skyrocketing so the trend may as well reverse.
