[Question] Why is Tessellation multiplier limited to 8?

Setting Tessellation multiplier to anything above 8 has no effect. Is it a bug or a limitation?

I asked the same question a few month ago. Epic said that everything above 8 would result in a massive performance drop. If you need more tessellation, import your mesh with a higher density in the first place.

EIGHT???

For any mesh with any number of triangles above 2,

a tessellation multiplier of 8 would melt most people’s computers

If I go above tessellation = 3 for any mesh with any reasonable number of triangles the density of the mesh is already beyond anything my bump map resolution can even use

#Wireframe

Have you turned your material on to wireframe to notice what is happening as you get toward 8 ?

I would have to zoom in very close at a tessellation of just 3 because the mesh gets so dense that its hard to see the individual polygons

Thanks Christian & Rama,

Satheesh, here is the link to the answer from Nick.P: https://rocket.unrealengine.com/questions/4126/tessellation-limit.html

Ahh yes.Thanks Stephen & Christian & Rama!

Argh I really wish Epic would put this into their documentation, I¨ve been forever trying to understand why the TM isn¨t working, I was testing between 10 and 100 not noticing any difference, but yeah Im just using a 1 poly test mesh
