Summary
Attempting to publish a promotional video with a new island revision results in an error that locks up the process for the better part of a day before you can attempt to re-publish.

What Type of Bug are you experiencing?
Publishing
Steps to Reproduce
I’m not sure exactly how to get the “missing Etag on Upload” error, precisely, or I’d work around it, but this should potentially work:
make a 25 second video, delete the audio, follow the rest of the guidelines and add it to a new release, and hit submit.
Expected Result
a) if valid, it just works
b) if invalid, it gives a human-readable, ideally actionable error, and cancels the publish. This is what happens for example, if you try to upload a .MOV (which the guidelines say should be valid), where it gives “unknown server error” and doesn’t submit the build for review.
Observed Result
If the video in question has some unknown issue (removing audio doesn’t always fix it), you get a “missing ETAG in Upload” popup, which disappears quickly, and then the green “build submitted for review” popup happens.
At this point, you can’t cancel the review, you have to wait for it to time out eventually.
Platform(s)
Windows? That’s what I’m creating the release on.

Additional Notes
TLDR: if the video is “bad”, it should not enter review at all. if it DOES enter review, giving the author a chance to recognize that something weird happened, and cancel it would be great. Right now I’ll be stuck in limbo until the mystery logjam clears.
In general, the video upload seems like voodoo. For the longest time, only 1 out of my 6 maps had a working trailer. I was using DaVinci Resolve, and using what seemed to be all the correct rez/length/codec/etc listed on the publishing page, but they all failed either with the missing_etag or with the “backend dependency unknown” error. I eventually just tried running things through capcut desktop, and it seemed ok for one or two uploads, then I got the etag thing again.
- it would be great if the publishing page notes were accurate, maybe they are, but anecdotally, if I try to submit a .mov (which is listed there as valid) it fails.
- neither the “unknown” or “etag” error say anything about audio track. It seems to always somehow be related to audio, but sometimes not. Having human-readable-and-actionable errors would go a long way.
- Some way to validate videos offline, outside of publishing, would be super great.
