Publishing Error involving video: "Missing_Etag" leads to bad release submissions.

Summary

Attempting to publish a promotional video with a new island revision results in an error that locks up the process for the better part of a day before you can attempt to re-publish.

Publishing

Steps to Reproduce

I’m not sure exactly how to get the “missing Etag on Upload” error, precisely, or I’d work around it, but this should potentially work:
make a 25 second video, delete the audio, follow the rest of the guidelines and add it to a new release, and hit submit.

Expected Result

a) if valid, it just works
b) if invalid, it gives a human-readable, ideally actionable error, and cancels the publish. This is what happens for example, if you try to upload a .MOV (which the guidelines say should be valid), where it gives “unknown server error” and doesn’t submit the build for review.

Observed Result

If the video in question has some unknown issue (removing audio doesn’t always fix it), you get a “missing ETAG in Upload” popup, which disappears quickly, and then the green “build submitted for review” popup happens.
At this point, you can’t cancel the review, you have to wait for it to time out eventually.

Platform(s)

Windows? That’s what I’m creating the release on.

Additional Notes

TLDR: if the video is “bad”, it should not enter review at all. if it DOES enter review, giving the author a chance to recognize that something weird happened, and cancel it would be great. Right now I’ll be stuck in limbo until the mystery logjam clears.

In general, the video upload seems like voodoo. For the longest time, only 1 out of my 6 maps had a working trailer. I was using DaVinci Resolve, and using what seemed to be all the correct rez/length/codec/etc listed on the publishing page, but they all failed either with the missing_etag or with the “backend dependency unknown” error. I eventually just tried running things through capcut desktop, and it seemed ok for one or two uploads, then I got the etag thing again.

  1. it would be great if the publishing page notes were accurate, maybe they are, but anecdotally, if I try to submit a .mov (which is listed there as valid) it fails.
  2. neither the “unknown” or “etag” error say anything about audio track. It seems to always somehow be related to audio, but sometimes not. Having human-readable-and-actionable errors would go a long way.
  3. Some way to validate videos offline, outside of publishing, would be super great.

sorry for the 3 images, I’d added a webp, which it said wasn’t supported, but seems to show up fine. It didn’t let me delete that, only add additional ones (jpeg).

I added the other one, the unknown server error which is named “expectedVideoFail” just as what normally happens when there’s a video problem, like having an audio track.

I searched for “etag” in forums and it basically came up with nothing. I find it hard to believe that I’m the only one who’s ever encountered this, or maybe I’m just the only one who ever caught the error in a screenshot before it disappeared.

thanks for your attention.

The most recent submission in question is still hung up in processing. The other few times it was cleared in a day or so.
Mostly just for documentation purposes.

of course then it immediately fails (which is good, so i can resubmit without the video)

I did get this notification, dialog, about my own IP.
I don’t know if this is just what they chose to clear the logjam and I shouldn’t be worried about it, or if I should appeal it?

In cases like this, should I be filling out the Attributions tab for my own work? I would have assumed it was understood. If necessary, I can do that.

This is what shows up in content review when it finally failed.
Not the IP thing, the Unknown error.

Hello, this would fall under creator support, please go to https://www.epicgames.com/help/en-US/c-202300000001640 and scroll to the bottom of the page. There is a “Contact Us” button at the bottom of the page.

Thank you!

FORT-983828 has been ‘Closed’. The issue reported is not caused by a bug in the tool.

*Edit: I understand this won’t be reopened here, but adding more information for context, so I (or others) can easily find it later.
Reached out to support, gave additional info, have replies from them from 10/16/2025 to 12/8/2025
Dec3: Alex R. asked if I could publish again and see if the same issue still happened, I responded that I couldn’t submit my current version of that map, as it was heavily under revision, but would as soon as I could.
Dec8: Stanley C. responded 8th to follow up if there were any concerns going forward.
Dec19: then submitted the Huunt map (code and update below) with a video as before, and got the same error. I responded to the previous support email thread to update them, but got an auto-reply about it being a closed ticket.
I then went to the support site, got the wrong agent who told me to go to a different agent, and I got frustrated and didn’t reply again until putting this here now.

^ redacted full last names just so it doesn’t seem like I’m doxxing anyone. Both named agents were kind and helpful. Just listed as people who know some context.*

It happened to me again on a different map with a different video.

  1. created release with video upload with audio track removed.
  2. while the portal is submitting, it throws that ETAG error dialog.
    1. portal does not wait, pause, and allow user to remove video.
    2. I don’t even remember if it specifically mentions that it’s a video issue.
    3. it just submits it anyway, with the green “successfully submitted” popup.
  3. After it’s submitted, it’s in review.
  4. user can’t cancel it, but it WILL fail.
  5. while it’s in review, user can’t submit another release behind it, without the video, but must wait for it to fail
  6. When it fails, it does so silently, and without any useable information. I don’t see an email with “huunt” or from “epic” in my inbox or in my spam about it failing.
  7. I only noticed it had failed four days after submission in the creator portal.
  8. resubmitting without video from the same private version 6112-6338-1606

reopening the ticket from the “contact us” button listed above, the AI couldn’t help and reopened to an agent eventually.

Summarizing issue again so I can copy/paste it if I have to again.

Issue with Creator Portal Island Release Submission process that puts a release into a bad state that doesn’t give useful errors at submission or eventual rejection. Hyptothesis is that it’s related to uploading videos with audio tracks removed, as is recommended by the documentation.

User story for my goals in pursuing discussion on this issue:

This is a feature request to improve a foggy UX

As a Creator, if there’s an error with a video file when I upload it, I’d like it to tell me immediately (either in creator portal or within UEFN) in the normal validation process, so I can quickly make changes and resubmit.

sort of live-updating some of this while chatting with Support Agent, to make sure that while I’m asking for human-readable data from you, that I’m providing human-readable requests.

Thanks for your patience.

EditEdit:
Ultimately, as long as I can FIND a workaround. I can obviously work around this, but I’m poking at it so that everyone has a better experience.

when the support agent gave me the link to the submission docs, I clicked through to the video format section which says

These are the recommended specifications for submitting a trailer for your island when publishing. They also work well for social media. Trailers will also eventually be supported in the Discover UI, so it’s good to get used to working within these parameters.

Requirements include:

  • Length: 15-30 seconds

  • File Type: MOV

  • Codec: ProRes

  • Frame rate: Native Source (don’t change the frame rate)

  • Aspect ratio: 16:9

  • Audio Bitrate: Uncompressed, Stereo

This actually contradicts the Creator Portal submission section which has

It’s not like I haven’t been successful at all in uploading videos, it just seems like voodoo, and I’m gun-shy of just “keep trying until it works”, vs just not having a video.
Successes:
Zuurniverse Adventures 8794-8487-4263 by valleydweller - Fortnite
Arctic Mishap 7202-9180-2093 by valleydweller - Fortnite
Casey Ownz! TMNT Hockey 0511-3500-6206 by valleydweller - Fortnite
both Adventure and TMNT had failures before I (feel like I ) got lucky getting one that worked.
