PS5 Split-Screen: Player 2 Native HUD Prompts Appear Late, Become Outdated, and Fail to Clear

Summary

In PS5 local split-screen mode, native interaction button prompts become out of sync with gameplay for Player 2 (bottom viewport).

Player 1 (top viewport) receives prompts correctly. Player 2’s prompts can appear after leaving an interaction area, disappear when entering it, display outdated instructions after an action has already succeeded, and remain visible after the interaction ends.

This is a gameplay-affecting problem, not simply a visual delay. The displayed instruction can disagree with what pressing the button will actually do.

A publicly accessible, independent UEFN test island has been created specifically to demonstrate the issue using two equivalent interactive light stations.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Start Fortnite on one PlayStation 5 with two local players in split-screen mode.

  2. Enter the public island 0678-0279-8707.

  3. Have both players proceed through the introduction into the Test Area.

  4. Have each player approach their own colored light station.

  5. Compare the native interaction prompts in the top and bottom viewports.

  6. Have Player 2 enter the interaction area, leave it, and re-enter.

  7. Have Player 2 operate the lamp, even if the expected interaction prompt is missing.

  8. Observe the actual lamp state and compare it with the instructions displayed to Player 2.

  9. Leave the interaction area again and observe whether the final instruction disappears.

Expected Result

Both players should receive native HUD instructions that accurately reflect their current interaction state.

Entering an available interaction area should display the appropriate action prompt.

Leaving the area should remove that prompt.

Completing an interaction should update the instructions to reflect the new state.

Obsolete instructions should not remain visible.

Observed Result

During PS5 testing under Fortnite 43.00:

Player 1 — Top Viewport

  • Entering the interaction area displays the correct prompt.
  • Leaving removes the prompt.
  • Re-entering displays the appropriate prompt again.

Player 2 — Bottom Viewport

  • Entering the interaction area initially displays no prompt.
  • Leaving causes the missing prompt to appear late.
  • Re-entering can cause that prompt to disappear.
  • Pressing the interaction button still operates the lamp correctly.
  • After the lamp has already changed state, an outdated instruction appears.
  • The final obsolete prompt may remain visible after its purpose has ended.

The actual interaction succeeds while the HUD instructions are incorrect.

Additional Notes

Independent Reproduction Environment

The published island contains two equivalent, independently operated light stations.

Both players can interact simultaneously, making comparison between the upper and lower viewports straightforward.

The demonstration does not artificially delay prompts, simulate incorrect instructions, or manufacture the failure. The lamps provide separate visual confirmation of actual gameplay state.

The issue was reproduced during testing under Fortnite 43.00. The independent demonstration was subsequently published on November 4, 2026, and verified publicly accessible on PS5.

Why This Matters

A player depends on native HUD prompts to understand which actions are available and what pressing a button will do.

When these prompts are delayed or associated with an obsolete gameplay state, Player 2 can receive misleading instructions.

The problem may affect any experience that depends on accurate native interaction prompts during local split-screen gameplay.

Request

Please investigate the synchronization and cleanup of native interaction HUD prompts for Player 2 in PS5 local split-screen mode.

The public island code above allows engineers to observe the top-versus-bottom discrepancy directly.

The underlying engine root cause has not been established.
