Prop Hunt Mechanics Broken Since Beginning

Summary

The Prop Hunt Mechanic has been broken since first being introduced. There has always been an extreme limitation on the distance you may place your hunter spawns from the location of where players will be transforming into props. The distance is not far. After this limited distance, players transforming into props will see themselves turn into the proper size of prop. However, the prop hunters will see a much larger size making the hiding player easy to find. The distance in the demonstration video is precisely 30,336 away on the z-axis only.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create a new project in UEFN
  2. Place a prop-o-matic device in your scene (not required, Prop Gun works without it)
  3. Grant the prop gun or place it as a pickup
  4. Place several different props in the scene capable of being used in prop hunt
  5. Place spawners
  6. Start game with at least 2 players
  7. Go a distance of approximately 11,776 units in-engine or 115 meters in-game away from the player transforming
  8. Have player transform
  9. Witness the player turn into a larger size of the prop they selected

Expected Result

Expected result is that the player will turn into the proper sized prop no matter the distance the prop hunter is at the time of transformation.

Observed Result

Player transforming turns into a larger sized version of the prop making it easy to be spotted.

Platform(s)

Windows 11

Additional Notes

Please review the following videos for demonstration of this problem:

I tested this again after Update 30.00. It’s still happening. For many developers, this is probably low impact because they may be creating small maps. However, if your goal is to create a larger map or give the illusion of larger scale, this is a critical bug. The distance isn’t far. At 111 meters in-game props appear the normal size for the hunters. However, at 112 meters, props (depending on the prop) will be significantly larger and the player that turned into the prop doesn’t know. Here is the latest test video: https://youtu.be/2mqVP_E-9UA

I have also found this to still be true, my work around is that I create a “hunter waiting area” that is separate from the initial lobby, especially for my map this is critical because I have 6 potential areas for prop hunting that are chosen at random each round, so I have a hunter waiting area near each hunting location and the hunters spawn to that when the props go into the hunt area.

Yeah it’s frustrating because I have a very specific idea for a Prop Hunt game where the hunters are kept at an almost identical location. The idea is to provide a bit of immersion rather than just play hide and seek. But because of the size of the two identical environments, this distance bug comes into play.

This has been a bug for years.
