Good question, If you’re using the ‘Grass System’ I think the best practice would be to have a different material for heavily sloping areas. (For example, if the surface is close to vertical, a rock material without an associated grass system would be used)
If you’re using the Foliage Painting tool, just set ‘Ground Slope Angle’ Max to something low.

You may want to check the landscape material include in the “A boy and his kite” demo. You can select and migrate it to your project, and all related assets will be linked and migrated too. In case you need, there are good tutorials showing the steps of creating a landscape “auto-material”.
