Possible to alter object normals for lighting with affecting smoothing?

Hi. Non-programmer, non-developer here. I’m doing base research into a custom rendering modification/solution and want to know if this is possible in Unreal.

We want to alter the direction of an object’s normals for lighting, but leave the object smoothing intact. Is doing such a thing possible in Unreal? If possible, would it require doing something potentially catastrophic? I’m well out of my depth (I’ve been out of the 3D industry for close to twenty years) and just trying to get a an idea of where to plant a flag for a custom rendering solution.

TIA!
