Possible Discovery / For You Recommendation Issue Causing Synchronized CCU Shifts

Summary

Possible Discovery traffic source issue affecting multiple islands across different genres.

Since approximately 00:00 UTC on June 24, multiple islands experienced a sudden and significant CCU drop within a very short period of time, despite no updates, outages, or creator-side changes.

Example affected islands:

• 9465-4421-6613
• 7399-8763-4003
• 2678-5257-1845
• 7818-6759-9682

At the same time, several other islands experienced unusually large CCU increases, in some cases gaining more than 1,000 concurrent players within roughly one hour despite no known Discovery announcements or visible category changes.

Examples:

• 0953-7325-4456
• 7550-7578-1580

The timing of these gains and losses appears highly synchronized. This may indicate a Discovery traffic allocation issue, potentially related to For You recommendations or another recommendation system, rather than normal player behavior or a category-specific adjustment.

Steps to Reproduce

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Fortnite.GG and search for the affected islands.
  2. Review the player count graphs around 00:00 UTC on June 24, 2026.
  3. Compare multiple unrelated islands across different genres.
  4. Observe that several islands experienced sudden and significant CCU drops at approximately the same time.
  5. Compare these trends with islands that experienced unusually large CCU increases during the same timeframe.
  6. Verify that the gains and losses appear highly synchronized across multiple islands.

Expected Result

Discovery traffic should be distributed normally and consistently across eligible islands.

Multiple unrelated islands should not experience highly synchronized CCU drops unless there has been an intentional Discovery change or recommendation-system adjustment.

Any major Discovery traffic reallocation should be reflected by an announced system change or have a clear explanation in the analytics data.

Observed Result

Beginning around 00:00 UTC on June 24, 2026, multiple islands across different genres experienced sudden CCU drops, in some cases exceeding 50% within a short period of time.

Examples of affected islands:

• 9465-4421-6613
• 7399-8763-4003
• 2678-5257-1845
• 7818-6759-9682

At the same time, other islands experienced unusually large traffic increases, including gains of more than 1,000 concurrent players within approximately one hour.

Examples:

• 0953-7325-4456
• 7550-7578-1580

The timing of these gains and losses appears highly synchronized and may indicate an issue with Discovery traffic allocation, potentially related to For You recommendations or another Discovery recommendation system.

Additional Notes

This issue is having a significant impact on creators.

Several islands appear to have lost a substantial portion of their traffic almost simultaneously, causing rapid declines in CCU and making performance highly unstable despite no changes being made by the creators themselves.

For islands that rely on consistent player counts, these sudden traffic shifts can have a major effect on retention, matchmaking quality, visibility, and revenue.

What is particularly concerning is that multiple islands appear to be losing players at the same time that other islands are gaining unusually large amounts of traffic, in some cases over 1,000 concurrent players within approximately one hour.

If this behavior is intentional, additional transparency would be greatly appreciated so creators can better understand how Discovery traffic is being allocated. If it is not intentional, it may indicate a Discovery-related issue that is severely impacting affected islands.

At the moment, some islands appear to be effectively “dying” despite no updates, downtime, policy violations, or creator-side changes, which creates significant uncertainty and instability for creators operating live experiences.

Hi @MIGUELITO_GOL I have a response from one of our engineers.

We looked into the June 24 movement across the islands flagged. Your genre-row placements held steady through that window; on every refresh cycle, those islands stayed served near the top of their row. We do run continuous exploration that varies the ordering slightly from cycle to cycle, but it did not move these islands meaningfully or remove them from any row. The player-count changes are within the normal range of daily variation. Two of the islands actually grew over the same period, and one had been declining since the prior week. We did not make a Discovery change that reallocated traffic away from these islands.

Hi, first of all, thank you very much for taking the time to investigate this and reply. I really appreciate it, and it means a lot that you looked into the report.

That said, I was hoping you could please take another look at the data I’m providing below, because I believe there may be something that was missed.

Around 00:00 CET on June 24, multiple Sports & Racing islands experienced an almost simultaneous 50% CCU drop despite no updates, no metadata changes, and no Discovery changes on our side.

Examples:

  • 7818-6759-9682

  • 7399-8763-4003

  • 9465-4421-6613

  • 0995-3311-4975

  • 2678-5257-1845

There are more examples beyond these. (mainly affecting Sport & Racing Islands)

The important part is that the following day these same islands remained in the same Discovery tabs with the same placements, fortnite even had slightly higher CCU than the previous day. Despite that, they all experienced an almost identical drop starting at the same time and not recovering from it. This is why it doesn’t look like normal day-to-day variation to me.

At almost exactly the same moment, This two Deathrun ** & Platformer** islands experienced the opposite effect and gained a significant amount of traffic, for example:

(1K CCU in 1h) without any discovery changes, any external promotion or nothing related

  • 7550-7578-1580

  • 0953-7325-4456

This is impossible without my theory a huge change on how these 2 island are recomended to other players, it looks like the recomendations from the maps that lost the ccu just went directly to this maps.

Talkign about the Sport & Racing Islands, At the same time, overall Fortnite CCU was increasing, while these islands suddenly lost around half of their players almost instantly. Looking at the graphs, it’s very difficult to explain this as normal player behaviour when multiple unrelated islands changed direction at the exact same time.

One more thing that may be relevant: today many creators noticed changes in how islands appear within Discovery tabs. A large number of maps were suddenly entering the #1/#2 positions despite having very low player counts, which is actually a positive change because it gives smaller maps exposure.

This makes me wonder if there may have been recent changes to the Discovery serving or tab allocation system, and whether those changes could have unintentionally affected how certain Sports & Racing islands were recommended while increasing recommendations for others. I’m not saying this is definitely what happened, but it seems like a possibility worth investigating.

Could you please review the information above and the attached data once more? If possible, I’d really appreciate if this could be escalated to the Discovery engineering team. If there was an unintended issue, even a temporary one, it’s having a significant impact on some creators islands.

Thank you again for taking the time to read this and for looking into it.

My island is 9465-4421-6613 discussed here, and this was very strange behavior with discover, it was on a very solid trend and then whatever happened here affected the tab significantly and these other maps very negatively

@Flak I wanted to share one more piece of evidence that I believe is important.

Comparing June 23 and June 24, my Discovery analytics show an almost 50% drop in some of the main Discovery traffic sources:

  • Discover - Homebar: 30,010 → 17,036 (-43%)

  • Discover - Recommendations: 5,027 → 2,472 (-51%)

This isn’t a small fluctuation. It’s a very significant drop that happened overnight and lines up with the synchronized CCU drop I reported previously.

What makes me believe this deserves another look is that this doesn’t appear to be isolated to my island. Several other islands experienced very similar drops at the same time, and other creators have told me they are seeing nearly the same percentage decrease in their own analytics as well. I also understand that some of them intend to report the issue from their side.

I’m not trying to argue that an intentional Discovery change was made. Since you’ve confirmed that wasn’t the case, I’m simply trying to help identify whether there may have been an unintended issue affecting specific Discovery traffic sources.

If there’s any additional data I can provide that would help the investigation, I’d be more than happy to do so.

Here the analytics,
Both “For you” and Recomendations that shows to the player dropds a 50%, Thanks again for looking into this Flak, i hope this informations helps.

No Discovery Changes, no Updates on the map just like that

I also wanted to share another observation that may be relevant.

This screenshot is from a player whose play history consists almost entirely of Sport & Racing (driving) maps.

Despite that, their For You row is now dominated by Deathrun & Platformer islands, including several of the islands that experienced the large CCU increases around June 24.

Meanwhile, the Sport & Racing islands that this player typically plays are no longer being surfaced in For You, even though they still appear in the dedicated Sport & Racing row.

This isn’t intended as proof by itself, since For You recommendations are personalized. However, combined with the more than 50% drop in Homebar traffic, the 50% drop in Recommendations traffic, for other creators on this genre it is more than a (75%) the synchronized CCU drops across multiple islands, and similar reports from other creators, it seems consistent with the possibility that something changed in how For You recommendations are being served.

I hope this additional example is helpful for the investigation.

Thank you for routing this to the appropriate team.

This issue is having a significant impact on multiple creators, particularly across Sport & Racing islands, so I really appreciate it being investigated.

If it would help, I’m happy to provide additional analytics, Discovery traffic breakdowns, or any other data from the affected islands over the coming days while the issue is still occurring.

Thank you again for your time.

As an update to this thread, it has caused lasting effects and player count drops in a significant way on my island code, 9465-4421-6613 and it still hasn’t recovered

Hey @Flak is there anyway to get an update on this, i posted updated analytics but its been really devastating to my map
