Got an answer from PayPal. Sadly for a subscription you need to add a credit card

Das Abschließen eines Abonnement ist nur mit einer hinterlegten Kreditkarte möglich. Nur mit vorhandenem Guthaben kann ein Abonnement leider nicht eingerichtet werden.

Maybe if Epic could add an option for an one time payment it would work, otherwise I see no sense for a PayPal option anyways. I will have a look at the virtual credit cards…
