Permanent bullet hole

Hi again everybody!
I was thinking how to make a bullet hole but this one bust be permanent until the map close. I considered to use decals for that but i saw it has a relative high performance.
Any alternative or something?

PD: The geometry complexity of my level is formed by cubes only.

the only ways i can think of are decals, texture switching, vertex painting (not sure if can be done at runtime), or destroying the actor you hit. in any case decals are probably easiest and most performant.
