PCG foliage renders blurry in shadows

Hi, I’ve been working on some grass and it looks good outside of shadows, but on adding some trees to the mix I’ve realised that the foliage gets incredibly blurry when in the shade.

My global illumination method is screen space. In lumen this works fine, but I have other problems with lumen and it’s a lot slower for me so for the meantime I’d like to keep working with the other GI methods.

The grass is generated with a PCG volume. When I paint the foliage directly, the shadow issue doesn’t occur/the shadows seem to work differently. I also notice some weird banded highlights on the PCG grass when viewed from a higher angle.

  1. Is there a setting in my PCG graph or something that I’m missing that would fix this?
  2. Is this an issue with GI, my PCG volume, my shadow settings, or something else?
  3. When using Lumen, I can see that the grass from my PCG volume has far darker shadows near the base of the foliage - maybe from being cast on itself - compared to the hand-painted patches. Could this be the cause/what setting impacts this?

(I think this is the right area for this but sorry if it isn’t)

NB: the grass patch on the right of the bottom picture is the same as the grass used in my PCG volume. The left has slightly different normals that I probably won’t be using.
