Opening Project Freezes my pc at 95%

Hey guys, I’m having a serious issue that i need resolved, Ive tried everything I can and nothing has helped.

I’m trying to open an Unreal 4.26.2 project but whenever the project gets to ~95% my computer locks up and completely freezes requiring a restart. Ive tried updating drivers, changing to NVIDIA Studio drivers, reinstalling the project, reinstalling unreal and alot more but nothing has helped in the slightest.

Im running on a 3060, ryzen 5600x with 16gb of ram, its not overheating since the fans are spitting out cool air, some other people on the project have lower spec pcs that can open the project just fine Im at a total loss and have spent all day trying to fix this, any help would be appreciated.

Hi RawSpaghetti,

Stalling at 95% happens for shader compilation. (And advice there is just to wait for however many hours it takes) But complete lockup / no CPU usage is unique.

Press CTRL + Shift + Escape to keep a closer eye on your CPU (Instead of just judging by air temps) It should be getting ravaged by compilation at that 95% mark. (Multiple shader compilation processes running, 100% CPU usage)

Try deleting Saved and Intermediate folders in your project.

Maybe something more engine-related got corrupted. Do a ‘Verify’ in the launcher options for engine version.

Maybe there are cached things that are corrupted - Consider deleting

D:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_5.0\Engine\DerivedDataCache

and

C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine

(Make backups of these folders, or leave them in recycle bin just in case)

Try a different version of the project you’re trying to open? (have friend repackage)

aaannnddd if none of that works + you are feelin savvy/crazy maybe go into bios and downclock cpu? I feel like I need a liability disclaimer for that one. :-p (general thinking here is that shader compilation is pushing some component over the edge)

Welcome to the Forums, let us know if any of those does the trick.
