Nanite and Forward Shading Compatibility Issue in Unreal Engine 5.1.1

Hello everyone,

I noticed that Nanite in Unreal Engine 5.1.1 seems not to work with Forward Shading. I started a new project using the default template “Games → VR” and enabled Nanite for one of the assets. However, nothing is displayed in the Nanite view. Only when Forward Shading is deactivated in the Project Settings will something be displayed in the Nanite Overview.

ForewardShading enabled:

Am I missing something here? Is this issue possibly related to another setting?

I was able to reproduce the same behavior in the “Games → Blank” template as well. Therefore, I assume there is a connection between Nanite and Forward Shading.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nanite and Lumen are not supported w. Forward Shading.

Hey,

thanks for the quick reply. Is it mentioned in the documentation that Nanite is not compatible with ForwardShading? If not, it might be a good idea to add this information.

Perhaps an error message could also be added to indicate why Nanite is not working.

Is this still not compatible? I’d rather be on forward rendering for VR
