Hi guys!
I’ve been learning UnrealEngine for a few years now but I’m new to the community.
Anyway! Let’s get to the topic!
Music box is a project out of my personal dark projects shelf.
---- Read This if You Are Interested About The Story ----
The Idea actually started from creating a girl’s bedroom ( my upcoming personal project ) and I wanted a cursed object in that room. after a few hours of thinking and talking to my friends, the cursed music box came up a few times in my head so I decided to give it a try!
The results were good enough ( for me ) to make it a separate project.
The whole story is that the music box is possessed by a dark creature that will take the owner to the woods and poof!! The owner becomes the “doll” in that music box and the music box will rest in the woods and wait for the next owner to find it.
--------- The End!
Before we start. My PC is old, so no RTX and ray tracing! I hope you like the results!
This is absolutely stunning and the story that you provide pulls me in even more. I was a little curious on your process and was wondering how long it took from start to finish, if I may ask that is.
Your texturing is wonderfully done and I’m curious where you got such beautiful textures.
Thank you for sharing your captivating short cinematic, “Musicbox,” with us on the forums. You brilliantly merged the sound of the music box winding up, the background music, and the camera motion/POV shifts to create a powerful and eerie message! The sequence flows naturally, and the result is impressive. I must say, I wish that this cinematic was longer.
Admittedly, I watched it from a distance, expecting a jump scare to strike at any moment.
I think I made this 2 years ago so I’m not really sure, I think about 2 weeks or 3 maybe?
The modeling and texturing took a short time. I had no experience in lighting a scene so that took a lot of time.
I remember watching a video on YouTube about how exactly a music box works and what some of the gears do. I used the same gears but bigger with more teeth to make them a little more interesting.
I textured everything in Substance Painter, and I used a lot of built-in materials, maps, and masks. And for the forest shot, everything is from Megascans as you can guess already
I hope I answered everything you wanted to know. If not feel free to ask.
I’m not happy with some of the shots, but I couldn’t let myself not use them as they were interesting still renders so I animated them or made a camera move to have them in the cinematic.
I still struggle while making a cinematic. Everything looks good in still renders but as soon as they enter the cinematic world with the animations I’m not happy with the results :)) long way to go I guess.
To be honest, I was out of “things” to show and the music was already repeating too many times, haha!
You answered all of my questions quite beautifully and I appreciate that! I was curious if I can ask about Substance Painter. Is that an easy to use program or is it something you should research before using?
I’m no master here but in my opinion, It definitely is an easy-to-use program If you know Photoshop. If not, it’ll take a while before you understand it completely. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t research before using it
I’m self-taught and I had no problem learning it thanks to YouTube! I totally recommend watching a few videos on YouTube to see if you like the software.
Also, If you decide to use it and have any problems working with Substance Painter, you’re always welcome to DM me.
The pleasure is all mine! I’m sorry to hear you struggled with making the cinematic and aren’t happy with the overall results. It did turn out fantastic, for what it’s worth! Thank you again for sharing your creation with us, and I hope we get to see the personal project this cursed music box will reside in soon.
