Whenever I am in the materials editor, the textures that I drag in or create in the editor won’t update in their respective nodes nor are any changes reflected on the preview mesh. The nodes show black and the preview mesh just has the default texture. It’s not that the materials editor is running slowly, it never updates no matter how long I wait.
This has really been a downer when trying to learn how to create/work with materials since I can’t see the results of my work. The objects in the viewport that use the custom material just display the default texture and any particle systems just display black.
I saw a post where someone was having a similar problem, but I don’t have a link to it. If I remember correctly, the issue was that the materials were taking a long time to update, but they did actually update in the end. The solution was to set the engine scalability settings lower than they were running before. Just for kicks and giggles I set the engine scalability settings as low as they would go with no luck.
Possibly a more promising lead; I did find this post:
TL;DR: a Windows user had an issue that seemed to be almost identical to the issue I’m having (except my materials editor doesn’t update when opening Finder or minimizing the program). Their problem was resolved when they updated their os to meet the minimum requirements for UE4.
I’m running Mac OS Sierra Version 10.12.6, and I see that UE4’s minimum requirement is 10.13.5. Based on what I read in the other thread, it seems to follow that if updating the os worked for a Windows user whose os previously did not meet the minimum requirements, it should theoretically work for Mac, right?
For now, my plan is that I’ll have my husband update my os this weekend, but he suspects that since there’s not that much of a difference between the version I’m running now and the version that meets the minimum requirement, updating the os may not resolve my issue at all, and we will have wasted a couple of days in the process just trying to figure that out.
What I want to know:
Outside of what I’ve already tried and potentially updating my os, is there ANYTHING else that I can do to resolve this issue so that I might be able to avoid having to update my os?
-OR-
Can I at least get a solid confirmation that updating my os will absolutely fix my problem?
