Matchmaking Incorrectly Allocates 3 Players Into 2-Player Sessions

Summary

This issue has been reported since at least June 2025 and may have started earlier. It appears to affect multiple maps designed for 1 or 2 players.

The problem seems to occur when matchmaking allocates 3 players into a session configured for a maximum of 2 players.

This is much more noticeable during the live streams I do while playing with viewers, which usually reach around 2,000 spectators. When many people try to queue at the same time, this issue happens frequently, which is very discouraging during the live streams.

Matchmaking

Steps to Reproduce

1 - Attempt to queue into Blackoutz 1v1 (4174-4446-0308), which is configured for a maximum of 2 players.

2- Have multiple players queue at the same time (this does not appear to be strictly required for the issue to occur, but it seems to happen more frequently under high traffic conditions).

3- It appears that matchmaking may be placing 3 players into sessions configured for 2 players.

Expected Result

Matchmaking should only allocate up to the maximum number of players configured for the map (1 or 2 players).

No player should be placed into a session that exceeds the map’s player limit.

Observed Result

When this happens:

  • One player remains stuck on the loading screen.

  • After some time, they are returned to the lobby.

  • In most cases, no error message is displayed.

Additional Notes

There are reports that the affected player can hear the other two players communicating through voice chat while still on the loading screen. A screenshot is attached showing 3 players connected to voice chat in a map that only supports 2 players.

This behavior has been reported in 1v1 Build Fight [Rezon] (7835-3901-1999), where the player was returned to the lobby without an error message.

Similar reports have also occurred in 1v1 Build Fights! [4.6.4] (1832-0431-4852), where an error message was displayed. In Blackoutz 1v1, the issue sometimes occurs with an error message and sometimes without one, suggesting the underlying cause may be the same across these cases.

I will attach the following evidence:

  • Clip 1: Bug occurring in Blackoutz 1v1 involving a tester/moderator. You can hear two players who successfully loaded into the match talking, while the tester remains stuck on the loading screen.

  • Clip 2: Bug occurring during a live stream (03/03/2026) with an error message. I remained stuck for over 1 minute; in other cases, this has lasted over 3 minutes.

  • Clip 3: Issue occurring in 1v1 Build Fight [Rezon].

  • Screenshot: Showing 3 players in voice chat within the 2-player Blackoutz 1v1 map.

Note: All information provided above is based on our observations and reports collected from players. Some assumptions, including the possibility of matchmaking allocating 3 players into a 2-player session, are based on consistent patterns observed during these occurrences. There may be technical details that are not fully accurate, but the behavior described has been repeatedly experienced and documented.
