Matchmaking Friction within UEFN

Summary

Below i will describe a few issues with matchmaking in UEFN maps

  • Large maps when downloading for the player says “Preparing” for 5-10 minutes before it puts them in the map. This is a HUGE issue because players think the matchmaking is stuck and decide to leave the queue, since i assume the plan is to increase project size with thin client, something indicating the player that it isnt just “preparing” which is very ambigious, and something that tells the player what is actually going on in the matchmaking during the stages of matchmaking just so they dont leave.

  • 2nd issue is that we cannot “Precook” Our fortnite maps, leaving the players needing to cook our maps if that version is played for the first time on that platform.
    Example: You release a new version or 1st version of your map, this version has never been played before on playstation 4, a player who is on playstation 4 decides to play this version , now he has to wait 10-30 minutes for the content to “cook” for his platform, after that its cooked for the platform and its fine and subsequent players on that platform dont need to cook until a fortnite update or map update (still subject to issue 1) but the problem is you can imagine tons of players dont want to wait for the map to cook so you will loose a handful of players before it cooks

Steps to Reproduce

Issue 1: try to queue in a large large map (8612-8312-3179) heres one thats 80% proj size

Issue 2: make a private code of your map in editor and try to play it for the first time on your platform (the issue applies to private codes too)

Expected Result

Issue 1: that we have more matchmaking transparency so players dont leave the queue to play other maps

Issue 2: being able to precook our maps like every other video game, and players dont have to wait 10-30 minutes

Observed Result

Issue 1: Maps especially bigger ones say preparing for 5-10 minutes before suddenly loading you into the game

issue 2: We cant precook our maps and because of that the player that plays your map’s version for the first time on that platform has to wait 10-30 minutes

Before thin client comes for mobile players these things are an absolute MUST, thank you for reading.

You have my vote. When using a Nintendo Switch 1 and Xbox One X, they really took time.

you are right about the cooking and download times, Nintendo Switch 1 long job 35 minutes just after the Fortnite new version update.

Now your explanation solves the mystery. The only one that works well for me is the Samsung Galaxy G10 (old!) Android which always works best.
