Mat Cap?

This is actually a question I was requested to ask from my boss, was attempting to research but am not able to find anything. Is it possible to export mat cap files from Z brush and then import it into unreal 4 as a texture?

file type is .ZMT

No, Mat caps are a material, not a texture. Unreal can only import the most simple material features since materials in different programs can vary so greatly. And Zbrush can’t export FBX anyways.

Check out this thread:

yeah i edited that early from material to texture, thought maybe i had worded it wrong but i guess i had it right originally. Was reading through the forums, it seems like zbrush doesn’t seem to be very friendly with the unreal engine. my boss is currently baking in colors on zbrush and we already to know the file conversion to import mesh, but we were trying to find a way around baking the textures into the meshes. Any Ideas?

It’s more than just a texture, there’s things like specular settings. Zbrush isn’t really designed to go directly to use in another program, you create your content there and then set it up for games in a different 3D program.

thank you darth, I figured it out before I got back hear. It seems that you have to bake the colors in export the mesh as an obj file to blender or another 3d program and then export it from there as an FBX file to the ue4. thanks guys

however I am a bit confused about something, I did discover that ue4 does support obj files after the 4.2 update, did that change between the transition to 4.3?

OBJ import should still work in 4.3. but it doesnt for some reason. I just tried importing a simple mesh in obj format and it keeps importing and nothing happens. Lets wait for 4.4 and if it still doesnt work you can report it as a bug. Btw, keep in mind that obj has limitations, so you’ll want to use FBX most of the time.

we pretty much have gotten to the point where we are just gonna convert it to an fbx file via blender. I mean if 4.4 will allow for more functionality with obj files, we might change up, but it all depends on how long it takes for the new version to release.

It is here now. Check your launcher.
