Luos's Particle Showcase

Warning: Can take a while to load!

Since I am currently working on a yet to be announced game and creating the particles for it I thought it would be cool to show some of them off.
The game will have many many weapons, each with 3 charged versions. (think megaman/r-type for instance)
As the projectiles move rather fast and often arent around for more than a second some of the clips will have the particle disappear for a frame.
Occasionally I zoomed in quite a bit, so ingame the particles might be much smaller and therefore can lack some of the finer details.
(And I should get a better partial screen record software that doesn’t output as .gif :p)

these are the projectiles for the first weapon (and some of the most basic particles)

Looking good Luos ! Have been following your progress and gotta love your awesome art !

This is a just personal opinion on it, but i feel that the air burning up effect at the wouldn’t be there. it indicates that something with mass is moving at such a speed that the friction of the air moving against it heats it up. plasma/energy does not have any mass, so i think the air burning up effect looks completely out of place. on another note, i think the addition of a displacement effect trailing behind the particles would add another layer of depth, as it would indicate that the particles are so hot that it is causing the refractive index of the air to increase.

Thanks DarkZ
ImrealNow: The particles actually do have refraction, but cant be seen/really hard to see in the particle editor.
As for the air burning up effect, the game is anything but realistic and I consider them an artistic expression of particle falloff/heatwave. ( a good example would be most of the megaman X projectiles)

I do understand your point though and in a realistic environment i would not take this path.

Awesome, Awesome and more Awesome.

Outstanding partial work. Can’t wait to see these hurtling around on screen in-game

Thanks Justin, Wizzkid!

More to come, and saving some of the best for later

Edit: also put them on the first post.

Looks absolutely fantastic  Would love to see a tutorial or something in depth about how you created them

Hello Leon, Might do that in the near future

Here are some .gif/.mp4’s of the 3rd and 4th weapon.

And ill also update the first post to add these.

These are some amazing effects. Keep em coming. I’d also be interested in a tutorial if you had the time. =)

Ill def. make a tutorial, though what I am doing is rather easy.
Most of the particles are mesh based (created in 3dsmax) and a material applied to them.
(most of which I learned by studying the particles that came with UDK)

Hi Luos,

Looks fantastic! Can’t wait to see what else you come up with.

Looks great , looking forward to see more and will be following

Awesome looking FX work sir! Can’t wait to see more, and would love to have a tutorial to follow along w/ meself. =)

Im almost done with the main particles and tried to look at a better partial screen capture tool, but OBS doesn’t like the particle editor due to it being DX, and DXtory captures the whole screen.
So once they are all implemented ill make a video of all the particles in-game.

The following particles might not look that interesting, but they are being moved/rotated by blueprint and the result is rather interesting.
Sadly I cannot show you that result yet.

On a sidenote, initially I wanted to make a trail with ribbon, but due to the way the game is set up the trail would look ugly and often ends up being misplaced.
So I took another approach, which for the short time the particle is around gives off a decent blade-swoosh effect.

As for the tutorial, I am pondering a decent approach that’s easy to recreate.
But it would result in the need of some drawing software and a 3d program.
That should be fine right?

A tutorial would be awesome and WOW these look AMAZING!

Makes me want to go in the editor and make some things. I’ll have to pull apart the ones that come with Unreal 4 for the moment. Those mesh based ones are grabbing my attention though. So if you could do a tutorial involving that, that would be awesome.

I have no idea what kind of game this will be in, but I’m following it just to see these babies in action.

I prefer mesh based particles myself, if there is ever a gpu-based version of mesh particles id jump another hole in the ceiling as I did when ue4 got released :stuck_out_tongue:
(def. not saying this is the only way, you can do amazing stuff without them)
I will probably keep the tutorial focused on the mesh-particles as most what you can do with the textures for the meshes can be used for regular particles as well.
Keep in mind that my workflow might not be optimal but I prefer to work like it.

Working on collecting all the stuff needed for a tutorial, hopefully have stuff recorded tonight and then some video editing.

and hope my English is good enough for others to follow, as I am not a native English speaking person :stuck_out_tongue:

Ok, got most things set.
Result of tutorial:

Now to write out what I want to mention, and get recording.

These vfx look amazing yo. If you write a tut I will check it out!!

Tutorial is recorded, going to video edit it tomorrow (with the help of a friend).
It should be somewhere between 1 and 2 hours long and explain what I did in photoshop, 3dsmax, materials in ue4 and the particles itself.

I can tell i got tired at some point (5 am atm) and started to stutter a bit.
If the video’s are done ill let you guys know
