Hello,
I want to use a meta headset for VR, but I’d like to continue using Lumen technology. Is it compatible with the quest 2/3 or do I need the pro?
Thanks!
I unfortunately don’t think there’s any way you could run lumen at a usable quality setting on any of those platforms, sadly. Given how heavy it is on dedicated machines, you’re going to run into a lot of issues with battery life as well. Perhaps if you were doing the processing on PC and using a cable, but not on the device itself.
The Quest 2 is a last-gen mobile phone chip at its’ core, even with some optimizations, but you really couldn’t get dynamic GI working at a high quality level on it. The quest 3 seems significantly more powerful, but even so. If you can compare an XSX console GPU to a 2070, the question may be how close does the Quest 3 stack up to a 2070 in GPU power, because that’s what lumen is designed to run on.
I suppose you could use some of the foveated rendering features to cut down on GPU power if they’re supported, but given how much work lumen does in screen space, I have no idea what that would do. By and large, I just don’t think modern VR headsets have the horsepower to do real dynamic GI in non-trivial cases. Maybe Apple’s vision pro could, but that’s $3.5K and a big question mark.
Ok I understand. But if if I use it with a cable connected to a pc you think it’s possible to use Lumen ? Right ?
Sure! I have done it and it runs surprisingly great (in a powerful machine, of course)
