Lighting the unlit ? Can we do this in unreal??

Hey guys i found this game Roki, by Polygon Treehouse and it looks amazing, the devs go into a lot of their process which is really great to read, the way there fake the lighting in the game I find really interesting and I was wondering if you could achieve something like this in unreal.

You could put a parameter into your materials that you would then adjust based off nearby lights to change the overall color of the material to simulate lighting

Thats a cool idea, what about the shadows though, how can you let your character cast a shadow using a unlit material?

You’d have to find some way to multiply shadows against the material color
