layered rendering

is there a way to render a scene in multiple path? then it’s easier for me to adjust different layer in post production.

and also is there a way to render a separate path for my character animation; separate character from environment ?

I mean is there a way to render separate passes; to render characters on one pass or layer and render environment on the other layer.

I need the same thing, rendering environment (with post process) in one pass and characters (without post process) in another, layered on top. Tried it with custom depth pass and it wasn’t working in orthographic camera on landscape.
