Launcher Corrupting Project with Broken Plugin Updates

Summary

IIRC, a week ago, the EG Launcher reported that a plugin needed to be updated. I tried to update that plugin (Async Node), but it would not update. The [Update] button was unresponsive. The alternative was to reinstall the plugin. However, the Launcher kept reporting that the plugin needed to be updated. The creator of the plugin offered a copy for download, but eventually, numerous other plugins were producing the same issue, with the same results.

I tried to reinstall the Launcher, but that only seemed to make matters worse. Now, my projects were no longer detected by the Launcher. Browsing to the project was useless; I had to create a copy to launch the project, as the original project’s version was no longer recognized. This led to multiple corrupted file popups (image one popup attached).

Deleting the Launcher files was useless. Reinstalling the Launcher was useless. No positive result. The Epic Games AI assistant is useless. None of the suggested steps worked.

This evening, I removed the 5.5.4 engine (via the Launcher), and all of it’s plugins. After this, there was still an Engine file in that directory. I had to delete it manually. I reinstalled 5.5.4. And even after reinstalling it, the plugin update issue remains. (maybe a cache should have been cleared?).

Now my project is at risk. I have spent a week trying to fix this issue. I have made no progress on anything.

This is frustrating. The Launcher has always had it’s hicups, but they were always sorted out. In the last year or so, these Launcher issues have gotten worse. The same issues keep repeating.

I’m looking through my UPROJ file. I see some “MarketplaceURL” values for various plugins. There are three variations:

  1. “MarketplaceURL”: “com.epicgames.launcher://ue/marketplace/product/…somehash…”
  2. “MarketplaceURL”: “com.epicgames.launcher://ue/Fab/product/…somehash…”
  3. {empty}

My guess is that the ue/marketplace entries created issues.

Hope that helps.

This was finally resolved with a complete 24+ hour reset of my Win11 machine. I had to backup/reinstall everything. The Launcher and VS 2022 were reinstalled as well.

One mistake that I made was trying to manually delete the Launcher (all other attempts to delete it properly had failed). After that, it kept reinstalling itself.

12 days lost.

Hopefully Epic Games can do better here.

I got the Launcher working working again, and I was to resume work on my project.

However, about 10 days after this, the “plugin-update-issue” persists. Now it’s two different plugins that won’t update.

I expect this process will repeat.
