Landscape Mesh Performance Question

i like using minimal number of meshes for certain parts of the terrain that I can get away with cloning and moving around.

My question is whats better for performance, one mesh that has more polys +/- 2,000 poly but is a spherical shape that I can rotate and have “different” rocks and landscape textures by using different sides of the mesh, or use smaller meshes with less poly (+/- 500 Poly) but a bunch of different meshes?
