first off all: Great !!!
very impressed with what I’ve seen from your plugin.

I’m also a V2 developper and have build apps with the v1 in unity, but would like to use Unreal for our new projects.
I’d love to help you finalising your plugin since I also have experience with the v1 and have used filters for the clipping of the joints.
But yout github is down, could you mail me the plugin or I could give you acces to Bitbucket?

Its still up, make sure you are logged in/unreal engine 4 subscriber to see it [he forked the original engine source code from 4.1 / 4.2].

Could you help me out a little more, I’m kinda new to Unreal 4.

If try to compile it I get an error:
ERROR: Couldn’t find module rules file for module ‘OpenCV’.

But I already have compiled opencv with vs2013 (vc12) and used it with other projects.
Do I need to compile a specific version for the engine 4.2?

The official opencv build for VS2013 is fine. U have to write your own buildfile for opencv. U can use the buildfile for the kinectsdk as a template. Its located in KinectV2/Source/Thirdparty/K4WLib. Then create a OpenCv directory in thirdparty name it OpenCV.Build.cs and put the file there. Nevertheless the current version of the plugin available on github seems to be broken. First the OneEuroFilter dependency is missing - u have to comment it out and set EnableOneEuroFilter to false. Second u still need to hack the engine itself because FBoneContainer::InitializeTo needs to be exported from the engine dll.
I got the plugin running - the image streams work but the skeleton seems to be broken. At least the sample scene that posted earlier does not work with the current revision of the plugin. The avateering produces just random bone movement. Maybe the blueprint has to be adopted - no idea as I did not have time to look into it. As I understand it, is busy with work right now - I still hope we get an update sometime though because I really like the project ;).

Kinect was released today and got my shipping confirmation. Epic should be getting their’s soon. Now we can hopefully get a good community of Kinect Unreal developers.

Looking forward to finally being able to do some of my research. I have the prototype down with an IMU sensor, now to retrofit it for kinect.

Just got my Kinect V2 so looking forward to playing with this!

There are just a couple of third party libraries that weren’t included (openCV, and eurofilter)

Since Lion is busy with his awesome kickstarter project that got funded! I thought i would post a working build. I hope this is alright with you, if its not then let me know and i will take it down, as 99% of the content is lions, I just reverted and tweaked a couple things.

Since developers have Kinect v2 they probably could have figured it out but for those who are new to Unreal / don’t know how to use git, Your in luck!

A few notes:
-This is the second to latest version of lion’s plugin .
-It is still Purely a Plugin! (no engine edits required!)
-Works with Lions template (Color Feed, Depth Feed, and Infrared Feed, and Avateering skeleton tracking all work!)
-Updated to 4.3

Whats Missing/removed from latest commit
-OneEuroFiltering (reduce noise) - Not sure if it was in demo yet anyway?
-OpenCV
-Bug Fixes?

Install:
Required: Make sure you have Kinect SDK v2.0 installed

  1. Download the newest file from above.
  2. Extract the Kinectv2 folder it into your UE4.3 Github source ( i think if you update the source in project files it works aswell) it should be placed in “engine/plugins/” folder
  3. Generate your project files (To regenerate, delete the UE4.sln/.sdf/.suo then it should work fine). Build the editor again and it will detect the plugin and build :slight_smile:
  4. Load up the kinect project that Lion posted (You will get a bunch of errors). Go to Window -> Plugins and enable kinect.
  5. Reload the editor and woahla

I’lll try to add back in the one euro filter (which will be very helpful for VR) soon.

Did you install the Kinect 2.0 Preview SDK? It is required in order to work, It adds an Enviroment Variable where it is installed. The plugin uses that location to find the sdk ( Look at Plugins\KinectV2\Source\ThirdParty\K4WLib\K4WLib.Build.cs )

If you installed it using the default location it should be found in the SDK at

Hi,
I’m trying to use Oculus Rift and the old Kinect with SDK1.8 in UE4. Can i use the old Kinect with SDK2.0 and this plugin?

No it does not work with the old kinect/SDK. To be honest, for VR i would not even recommend trying to get it to work. Kinect 1 had way to much noise and for VR. It is very shocking and pulls you out of the immersion to the point of being a major distraction when your joints are rotating 5-10 degrees of noise.

If you are trying to do VR i would definitely recommend trying to get the new one (its not perfect but it works pretty well). The new Kinect is a huge step for vr and body tracking (it does have some noise, but with filtering it works pretty well).

Thanks for your quick reply. It’s a project at my university so i can’t wait for Kinect v2. Right know UE is running at 5-10 fps, so I cant really talk of VR immersion at all. Is it possible to use the same openCV noise filters with the old kinect,or is it just too much distortion?

But the fact you have this many errors means you probably don’t have the Kinect Plugin enabled (Window -> Plugins, Enable Kinect)

Unreal Crashes

Since Lion is busy with his awesome kickstarter project that got funded! I thought i would post a working build. I hope this is alright with you, if its not then let me know and i will take it down, as 99% of the content is lions, I just reverted and tweaked a couple things.

Since developers have Kinect v2 they probably could have figured it out but for those who are new to Unreal / don’t know how to use git, Your in luck!

A few notes:
-This is the second to latest version of lion’s plugin .
-It is still Purely a Plugin! (no engine edits required!)
-Works with Lions template (Color Feed, Depth Feed, and Infrared Feed, and Avateering skeleton tracking all work!)
-Updated to 4.3

Whats Missing/removed from latest commit
-OneEuroFiltering (reduce noise) - Not sure if it was in demo yet anyway?
-OpenCV
-Bug Fixes?

Install:
Required: Make sure you have Kinect SDK v2.0 installed

  1. Download the newest file from above.
  2. Extract the Kinectv2 folder it into your UE4.3 Github source ( i think if you update the source in project files it works aswell) it should be placed in “engine/plugins/” folder
  3. Generate your project files (To regenerate, delete the UE4.sln/.sdf/.suo then it should work fine). Build the editor again and it will detect the plugin and build :slight_smile:
  4. Load up the kinect project that Lion posted (You will get a bunch of errors). Go to Window -> Plugins and enable kinect.
  5. Reload the editor and woahla

I’lll try to add back in the one euro filter (which will be very helpful for VR) soon.

No problem! Sorry from being a little absent.

As it turns out, I have two separate USB 3 controllers and neither of which are officially supported (I am so frustrated with microsoft only supporting, or trying to support two controllers). They need this disclaimer in big bold letters (Renasas, Intel USB3 ONLY). Its quite sad if you ask me

I kinda gotta it working (and thats what i used to get UE4 working ). It will work fine sometimes, other times it won’t recognize, other times its being forced through USB2 speed despite being usb3, so i wasn’t sure exactly what was causing the issues (the Kinect or Plugin)

Anyway, I had enough and i finally have a renasas based usb 3 controller coming in today. So i shouldn’t have any issues with the kinect, so i’ll look at it and try to get a fix for that crash.

Microsoft said they were looking into it, but i hope Epic/Microsoft can create an official plugin. So we can get more advanced features and integrations :slight_smile:
